Retronauts Episode 407: LEGO Games

Retronauts? This here is Legonauts. Thanks to Patreon supporter Jeff Vlasek, we're taking a listenable look at the lucrative Lego license. Star Wars, Batman, even a quick squint at Harry Potter—if you can build it, and they made it into a video game, we're discussing it. Unless it's not one of those three things. Please join first-time host and full-time stud Stuart Gipp with Duplo-citous guests Jeremy Parish and the extremely aforementioned Jeff Vlasek for a complete load of blocks as we get Spyrius-ly Technic-al about the second-best Danish thing ever, Lego. (Bacon is first.) Episode artwork by Leeann Hamilton (@peannlui), edits by Greg Leahy.

*Beavis laugh* Erectooooor!

I'm not sure Stuart's antagonistic. It's typical British humor. Cross-cultural misunderstanding?

Great episode! Now I want to try the upcoming LEGO Skywalker Saga. All the talk about the LEGO bricks reminded me of how excited I was when Castle Systems first introduced the forest theme (Robin Hood idea?) in the late 80s.

Nice listen, though I don't quite understand the host (Stuart?) being needlessly antagonistic with the audience ("think of your own joke and LAUGH" comes to mind). I think there's a weird thing where content creators try to get ahead of potential critique by calling it our or calling for it ahead of time. It's not all that fun to be invited to complain...and here I am.

I worked as QA on the game Star Wars: Clone Wars: Republic Heroes back in 2010. The pitch of that game was to try and be a LEGO Star Wars style game - just without the LEGO stuff attached! Unfortunately it had a real rocky development and wasn't very good and stopped Lucasarts working with Krome Studios after that. A year later Traveller's Tales would release LEGO Star Wars III, also based on the Clone Wars cartoon, so I guess Lucas went right back to them.

The only original Xbox disc I own is on the DVD release of the uncut original versions of Star Wars episodes IV-VI. There’s a demo for Lego Star Wars on the DVD itself.

I was surprised the excellent Lego City didn't really come up, though in the end the opening music from it closed out the episode

Hey who’s talking shit about K’Nex? Those RollerCoasters were awesome

Very good job hosting, Stuart, and a solid episode to all involved. I only wished you guys had talked a little about Lego City Undercover, which I enjoyed way more than I ever thought I would and was a pretty great GTA clone. Looking forward to Stuart hosting again!

Never played a Lego game before, but this was quite fun! Thanks and nice stuff! My brother and I had the Space Police set and the Space Mining set, too.

Man, this was a fun episode, especially since you guys were talking about games I spent 7 years of my life working on! I honestly forget how many and which ones I’ve worked on when we used to churn out about 3 a year at the peak. Really enjoyed it! Also enjoyed the Chris Pratt “what can’t he do?” Bit at the end. What can’t he do indeed.

"Should Lego people talk?"

When Diamond said that Stuart would be hosting future episodes I didn't expect one so early! Great job Stuart. It's hard to believe that the TT Lego games are retro now. I remember loving the pantomimed Star Wars cut scenes and how they got creative with satirizing scenes from the movie. My wife and I went through all of the Batman games several years ago and had a blast exploring the worlds and figuring out how to get all the pieces and 100% them. The pick up and play nature makes them so great to play with a loved one.

I haven't finished it yet, but so far, so good, Stewart! Excellent work.

First a Diamond hosted episode and now a Stuart one? Hooray! Good job, the both of you. Hope you do more, soon.
