Episode 306: Monkey Island Mailbag

We've got a mighty haul of listener comments and questions from our last three Monkey Island episodes, so this week we've brought on series expert Nina Matsumoto (Thimbleweed Park cover artist and designer at Fangamer) once again to help us make some informed responses! Plus, after months of sitting on them, we finally read and respond to your requested input on our video game apparel episode! And to wrap up this installment, we chat about Dolores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure, Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert's quarantine gift to us all. So listen in and remain indoors, lest ye wantin' to be keelhauled!

Be sure to pre-order Nina's newest book: Sparks! Double Dog Dare.

Also, the Fansplainers on the Emoji Movie was fascinating. I watched it and could tell that it was soulless, but Ian Boothby is able to point out all the lazy decisions they made, and little things they could've done that would've made things so much better if anyone involved had cared.

I was going to suggest Nina do a Fansplainers about The Goofy Movie, then y'all brought it up. Plus I listened to this after beating Thimbleweed Park just last night (technically this morning). It's a funny ol' world.

"Fair dinkum" is true; honest; genuine. When you're 'fair dinkum' about something you're being honest in a 'no bullshit' sort of way, when used in reference to an object 'fair dinkum' means something is the real deal/genuine. "Fair dinkum?" as a question is like 'is it/are you true/for real?'

I would bet anything that hat warning was to avoid children's clothing fire code regulations. They're incredibly strict.

There shouldn't be any Thimbleweed Park spoilers in this one.

Tim Powers "On Stranger Tides" rules! I picked it up some years ago because of the MI connection and thoroughly enjoyed it, along with the author's other weird historical fiction novels. Just imagine - Ron Gilbert could have instead read Tim Power's "Declare" and then given us an adventure game about British secret intelligence trying to prevent the Soviet Union from harnessing the power of Arabian djinns.

Any unmarked spoilers for Thimbleweed Park in here? It'll be a while before I can listen to this anyway, still have to [re]play MI2 and Curse; since it's been so long, they're now re-spoilable for me!

I've only played through the first Monkey Island game. I need to set aside some time and catch up! The first was a brilliant game and I like the multiple responses you can give.

Another bonus is that it barely acknowledges 5, come to think of it. Just Athena as a character and that's it.

Huge agree with Bob on Ace Attorney 6 being a much better game than 5. A lot of it has to do with the checklist - 5 held your hand so much that I started predicting when characters would solve the puzzle for me, Babe Ruth style. 6 was much better in this regard, and had the added bonus of being a thematic followup to both Ace Attorney 3 and Apollo Justice, which I tend to think are the best games in the series.

Escape was good until Monkey Kombat
