Retronauts Episode 213: Game Boy

I mean, we couldn't not cover Game Boy for its 30th anniversary. Not us. It would be illegal.—Jeremy

Episode description: Jeremy Parish, Bob Mackey, Ray Barnholt, and Jared Petty look back at 30 years of Game Boy. The memories! The classics! The music! The inevitable eyestrain from trying to play games in the dark in the backseat of a car!

The games that I’m the proudest to own because they feel unique are the Game Boy games Jeremy used in Game Boy World that I purchased from him on eBay. Including the copy of Ayakashi no Shiro he had.

I remember seeing the VidPro cards for GameBoy at Toys R' US and how Final Fantasy Legend II was going for $40, the most expensive of any of them. The cheapest at $14 and $8? Hyper Lode Runner and Heiankyo Alien! Guess which ones I got for Christmas? In the end, not a bad thing.

John Simon

Yep, that's the one.

Sounds like it's in the same vein as Altered Space!

Listening to this made me remember one of my favourite Gameboy games. The lost classic Monster Max (1994). A nice little isometric game by Batman and Head Over Heels team Ritman and Drummond while they were at Rare. Sadly, Titus failed to distribute the game properly so no one bought it. But it's a lot of fun and a nice link to the UK 80s game scene.

What is the one Sega game released on Game Boy that Jeremy alluded to? Edit: A second try at searching seemed successful, Penguin Land?

Faux Macho

Whew... sorry. Rough weekend.

Just wanted to let you know, typo in the description. Jared Petty instead of Henry Gilbert. Love the show can’t wait to see you guys at MGC!
