Retronauts Episode 212: Namco's Arcade History, Pt. 3

Yep, we're back on our Namco kick again. This time, it's the full Retronauts East crew talking up the magic and mysteries of the company's output in 1986, ’87, and ’88. As usual, this means we dwell on some beloved classics, lament some duds, and marvel over works we've only been able to experience through secondhand viewing. From Rolling Thunder to Hopping Mappy, we've got ourselves a live one here....

Namco still celebrates their history in the Tales of games with costumes based on Pac-Man, Klonoa, Valkyrie, Tower of Druaga and a lot more. Beyond just costumes, they constantly reference the games in the backgrounds as well. The games love Namco's past and they don't get enough credit for that.

So I read the Wonder Momo shiftylook comic way back, which did lead me to buy the PCE port of the game. Agreed that it is kinda skeevy but it is pretty fun! I do think those shiftylook comics did get backed up - I’ve seen them in rar format pretty recently.

I love Rolling Thunder deeply, but the end of that game is absolutely brutal. I tried to finish it on NES 15 or so years ago and it burned a few whole weeks of a summer trying to work through it. I felt that playing it more like a puzzle game than an action game helped, but still.
