Retronauts Episode 207: Capcom's Disney Afternoon

We planned to record this episode about two years ago, back when Capcom published the Disney Afternoon Collection, but those plans fell through. And that's OK! Because this way, Bob and I were able to record with Nina M., the cover artist for the collection, and Chris Sims, who thinks way too much about vintage Duck comics. The downside is that the delay meant the games themselves ended up not being as fresh in my memory as they were right around the time the Collection debuted... so it's a good thing everyone else was on-hand to shore up my failings, eh?

Comments

This episode has been scheduled for release this specific week for about two months. It's just one of those weird things.

Retronauts

To this day I still associate Ducktales with "Morphine Makes the Holy Known" and other amazing lyrics from its Finnish intro.

May be a coincidence that this episode got posted right after the Ducktales Moon Theme was referenced on the TV show.

Two things. 1) the most direct antecedent for TaleSpin is probably the early 80s show "Tales of the Gold Monkey" which was similarly about island hopping brush pilots and air pirates in a subtropical setting. It only ran for one year but got repeatedly rerun on USA Network and has punched above its weight in terms of cultural osmosis. 2) somehow there were entirely different Turbografx games released for Talespin and Darkwing. Neither seems to have much to offer.

The fact that we still haven’t gotten a Switch version of this continues to baffle and infuriate me.

El Pescado

They did a great job with this collection (as always when Frank is involved). I missed them entirely during the NES's run and it was a perfect way to play them today.
