The Media Experimented with Television Hypnosis Back in 1946

Here's Mel's latest video: https://youtu.be/W7ZRmKnkFJA

Is the power over the mind held by technology understood? Who could wield such unchecked and widespread influence?

The curious, soothing sway of the television, radio... even the telephone. These are relatively recent inventions which found a quick, comfortable acceptance into our homes due to their usefulneness, their convenience. Their ability to bring the world into your living room, and spark imaginative scenarios, etc.

But these devices have been little questioned by the public, even as experiments were underway to use their broadcast powers for such applications as — yes — hypnosis. All going back many decades.

It's a funny business, but no joke. The BBC and other proprietors of the early TV broadcast were testing out the capabilities (supposedly in a closed, internal setting); and what they determined was that hypnosis-via-television was all-to-possible, and therefore too dangerous to bring out into the full public sphere (officially, anyway). Similar achievements were demonstrated via radio in earlier years.

How that powerful, yet subtle technology has been used in the years since is, well, maybe not fit for casual conversation, and a bit up to speculation or the educated guess. But many hints have been dropped. The eerie narrative of the 1983 horror film Videodrome just happens to be the most vivid in my mind; for others, They Live speaks volumes. Portrayed in fiction, it isn't far-fetched from reality either.

That was awesome. You might want to check out Professor Simon Holland. Former BBC film and video creator. Now on YouTube and patreon.
