Retronauts Episode 173: The Many Voices of Mario

When Mario debuted in 1981's Donkey Kong, he entered a gaming landscape devoid of voice acting, so Nintendo never stopped to think, "Hey, what's this little guy supposed to sound like?" Over the years, though, as Mario entered the world of cartoons, live-action TV shows, and movies, someone had to sit down and decide on the voice of this formerly voiceless character. And decide they did! On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert as they explore the many voices of Mario, and trace the roots of his current, Nintendo-approved vocal interpretation. Mama mia!

Nobody has sounded like the Brooklynese Mario in โ€œa long timeโ€? FYI: If you travel in the outer boroughs of NYC or up into areas Westchester (or even in parts of Connecticut, where I live) and you will still hear that stereotypical NY/Tri-State thick accent.

Nope, it's just called "yacht." But it's probably the off-brand version of Yahtzee.

Bob Mackey

On that "edutainment" game collection, did you mean Yahtzee?

I tend to like the smaller groups and have come to appreciate alot of the more recent (last 5 years???) guest lists. We even get the man himself, Ray Barholt, now and again. Will we ever get the Double Dragon movie month episode?๐Ÿ˜–

I appreciate the feedback, but we don't have the resources of a giant, unsustainable website, and many of the people you liked hearing in the past have moved away, or they can't/don't want to podcast anymore.

Bob Mackey

I miss the wider range of guests Retronauts used to have more often, like old 1up co-workers, Chris Kohler, etc. I know all those people aren't just hanging around anymore to drop by, but sometimes Retronauts feels more like What A Video Game!, and the East Crew never gelled with me. I'm sorry that this is completely off topic. I do really appreciate the industry pioneers you guys get on occasions, and Jeremy's video series' are great.

Since y'all asked about Mario 3's Luigi, he was voiced by underrated SCTV and SNL alumnus Tony Rosato.

There are about a dozen Simpsons games we havenโ€™t covered yet!

Bob Mackey

I thought we were done with Talking Simpsons ads since we ran out of Simpsons games but I guess there are plenty of cartoons based on games still for What A Cartoon ads. ;)

I really love the Bob+Henry episodes!
