Retronauts Episode 158: Ranma 1/2

Oh no, we've gone full anime!

Well, sort of. This episode features annual Midwest Gaming Classic guest Caitlin Oliver, who wanted to chat with us about Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2 manga/anime/games this time. So here we are.

This week's show consists of two halves: First, an explanation of what Ranma 1/2 actually is, for those of you who didn't experience the ’90s anime explosion in the U.S. and therefore didn't take the brunt of it in the form of Ranma the way we did; and secondly, a rundown of the games based on Ranma 1/2, only two of which ever came to the U.S.

(I realize I technically abrogated the "no ads" promise of our Patreon subscription with the intro, but I hope that doesn't drive anyone away. I am very excited about the Flip Grip project. Don't worry, though, this is a one-time thing. I don't have any more ideas for video game accessories.)

Love,

Jeremy

I always loved Ranma 1/2 and its characters, and some of the games were interesting too. I would actually prefer it over Inuyasha.

I wrestled with deleting that conversational thread, because it ended up going in a direction I wasn't really comfortable with. But Bob's quip was so well timed that I hate to cut it. I dunno, I'm still undecided about the public feed version. — JP

In summer camp about 20 years ago, my counselor introduced our cabin to Ranma 1/2. I liked anime, but being exposed to a deep cut in 1998 (at least for a young boy in Kentucky) turned me into an irredeemable otaku. My life has been forever ruined as a result, but hey, this was a good Retronauts episode. So thanks for this.

Oh man, I've been looking forward to this. Hard Battle is a surprisingly fun and completely broken game.

Oh, there's more anime stuff on the way, don't you worry.

after listening to this I wish you guys would do more anime stuff :D I imported the SFC Hard Battle as a 10 yr old,, pretty sure I called one of the numbers in the back of EGM ♥

Really great to have Caitlin Oliver return to the show, and I love Ranma 1/2!

This is so exciting to me personally because I discovered Ranma 1/2 through the Hard Battle SNES game! I bought it on a deep discount and I liked it which prompted my friends to tell me “oh yeah, this is just like the cartoon” which stunned the hell out of me. In a way, that game was my gateway to the CONCEPT OF ANIME Heavy stuff.
