Episode 123: Breath of the Wild's Zelda heritage

Hi everyone, Jeremy here with an earlier-than-usual advance episode. I'm working Portland Retro Gaming Expo all weekend and will be on a plane all day Monday, so I wanted to be sure this made it up on time.

This episode takes an angle I've been wanting to use for a long time. And we have, occasionally, but I want to make more of A Thing of it: Covering new releases with an eye for their history and heritage. Given Nintendo's emphasis on Breath of the Wild's connections to and inspirations from NES Zelda, it seems a great test case.

Note that this episode was recorded back in May (I've held onto it for a while to give more people time to play and minimize spoiler concerns), so a few things have changed since then. Guest Jose Otero is no longer at IGN but rather works at Nintendo now; his comments here don't represent Nintendo and shouldn't be taken as such, since he wasn't employed at the company yet. Also, that awful staticky noise shows up. We've completely replaced our recording equipment (including the computer we use), so this is an annoying relic of the past. Sorry about that.

I think it's a very good episode otherwise, though. If you enjoy it, let us know. We could take this approach with MANY games in the future — from Mario Odyssey to Assassin Creed Origins to Wolfenstein II to, uh, games that aren't coming out on Oct. 27.

finally listening to this episode as I got BOTW for Christmas 2019 lol

Hey everyone, a quick update – Patreon is having some issues with the Retronauts account and we are no currently able to log in to post early episodes or even to make an announcement. I'm sorry for the delay on our early access episodes for this week. We will post as soon as Patreon sorts things out on their end.

That was a fantastic episode. As a NVC fan it was great to hear Jose on a podcast again, the letters of parents with children playing this game in their formative years really brought the feels too. Great job everyone, I would love to hear more episodes on this format.

Justin M

I haven’t yet...

Jeremy Parish

Great episode! Love this new format of comparing the new with the old. In the time that has passed, Jeremy/Bob/Henry have you guys completed BotW? If so, I'd be curious what you think of it now compared to when the podcast was recorded.

I need to play this game again.

Elliot Long

Contrasting and comparing elements of new gameplay vs old game mechanics, and style, seems to be something you all want to talk about during conversations. I don't think every episode should be like this, but I welcome many more in this type. It is still Retronauts if you tackle newer games. Loved it.

Robert Negoesco

Loved it, please do more, also if you want to talk about BotW every episode, that's fine. This was fantastic!

I really appreciated the context this episode provided, and hope you do more episodes like this in the future.

Zack Handlen

Moderately; no real story or end game spoilers. Mostly structural/experiential things.

Retronauts

I’ve listen to it now, and I really liked it. I think it’s a great format and I hope you do it more in the future.

JR Ralls

I really enjoy this format, which allows you to discuss modern gaming in the context of retro topics. Personally, I enjoy you guys addressing the current landscape of gaming from time to time, but it’s a great way to stay on theme for those who are more dogmatic about the retro moniker.

Scott Scallion

Can't say enough about how much I get out of Retronauts: I'm binging the entire backlog, buying old systems and creating a retropie. This show brings back great memories I'd forgotten. Thank you!

VanDiagram

Very much enjoyed this episode, hope you do more in this vein, for example on Mario Odyssey. Also, A for Effort in pronouncing my unpronouncable name!

Kormakur Gardarsson

How "spoilery" would you say this is? I probably won't get to Breath of the Wild for at least a year (minimum).

J.P. McD.

Oooo! Great idea! Haven't listened yet but I love the concept and I'm curious what you'll do with it.

JR Ralls

Excellent episode
