Retronauts Episode 102: Link's Awakening

Happy Memorial Day, those of you who happen to be celebrating that today. Cap off your holiday with — yes! — a new Retronauts. This one's a good one... I mean, they all are, but this one's about The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Which is really good.

Description: Jeremy and Bob wax rhapsodic with Henry Gilbert and Kat Bailey as they harmonize to sing the praises of the first portable Zelda: The iconoclastic and frequently surreal Link's Awakening.

Retronauts Episode 102: Link's Awakening

Comments

Aw god, I still get misty-eyed over this game. This the first time I finished a game and felt an emotional connection to the experience, particularly the finale dirge for the dream people as you pointed out.

Awesome episode. Crazy Tracy makes her return in the Gamecube game Captain Rainbow.

Really a wonderful episode. This certainly brought back memories of borrowing a friend's Game Boy and playing a whole ton of LA (though not all the way through). The game packs a ton of atmosphere and feeling and it works within the compact boundaries of the original Game Boy masterfully. I do feel like going back and finishing the game this time.

Great episode! I have never finished Link's Awakening, but I am inspired to give it another try on my 3DS!

Donkey Kong 94' ain't got nuthin' on this game! *Denzel voice*

Zelda is at it's finest when it's weird and unsettling. Together with Majora, Link's Awakening has the best premise of the entire franchise. And owls are a big part of the Twin Peaks lore too! I agree that it is time to retire Ganon, or at least give him a break. I didn't like the whole "Demise" reincarnation aspect of Skyward Sword, because it cements Link, Zelda and Ganon as this rigid, eternal trifecta. More outlandish premises! I wouldn't mind Nintendo taking the Breath of the Wild engine and serving up a quirkier sequel. Give Breath the type of cool pairing we enjoyed between the SNES/Gameboy and the two N64 games. Finally, the awesome illustrator Nicholas Delort did a gorgeous Link's Awakening tribute a year or two ago. Check it out if you haven't seen it! https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0185/4636/products/DelortZelda_1024x1024.png?v=1447714517

This is going to go down as one of my all time favourite episodes! Great job - it really has that classic Retronauts vibe.

Love the letters section! Keep this idea going! Thanks for putting this together

I'm looking foward to listening to this on my commute tomorrow. This is one of my favorite Game Boy games and favorite Zelda games. Plus you have a good group to discuss it! :-)
