Retronauts Episode 93: Castlevania on the go

I know a few people have been looking forward to this episode for a while, so I hope it lives up to expectations. As a follow-up to our previous Castlevania episodes over the past few years, this one sees us looking at the series' portable legacy from 2001-2008 — six games for Game Boy Advance and DS, five of them overseen by Koji Igarashi. And who better to join us this time around than fellow Igavania fanatic Shane Bettenhausen? I ask ya.

Hopefully this will make the wait for Bloodstained a little less painful.

I still say my favorite game for the 3ds is the 3 castlevania ds games haha thanks for the episode guys

Jeez Shane is a prude!! That intro line was very funny Jeremy and I thought a tasteful degree of crass

litax874

I picked up all 3 DS games for a smidge under $30 each. I look forward to playing them.

I really liked the guest on this episode, you should have him on again!

Jercyan

So many hours on Circle of the Moon with no backlight.

Jon Carstensen

Great episode!

This podcast was good, and reminded me that I still need to pick up the DS games. And maybe play more than a half hour of Harmony and Aria. Ugh, Dracula in Circle of the Moon, though. I don't know why they decided you needed to grind like 10 levels to stand a chance against him.

I do find episodes where Shane is on trying. Unlike other guests from the EGM days, with a wealth of knowledge and experience, Shane is unable to let the conversation flow and acts as if he's hosting the show and derails the show imo.

Antony Lowbridge-Ellis

Shane didn't like it because he wasn't on it.

Great episode as always, but a few times the music came in a bit too loud and I wasn't able to hear what you or Shane were saying. Maybe it's just my headphones, but wanted to mention it . Keep up the good work!

I'm not sure what Shane was on about the Dracula X episode. I think that is one of the best episodes Jeremy has ever done. It had tons of history and information on console hardware and the many forms of Castlevania in the early 90s as well as exquisite level design analysis. Plus Dan Adelman was fantastic in it. I think Shane is a great journalist but his constant interrupting and drifting away from the show notes kinda ruined this episode for me. It was great hearing about these games again but I feel there's a lot more to them than you guys managed to discuss. Please don't let guests like him stir the show next time. Thank you for all your amazing work.

Loved the episode, it was great to have Shane back!

SHANE!!

Brian Blakely

OK, the podcast should sound correct now. Sorry for the issues.

Retronauts

Uh oh! Lmao here comes Shane! Can't wait to see how this one is

Normallyretro

Yep, fixing now — fixed version should be uploaded shortly.

Retronauts

yeah I do agree. it got pretty frustrating at one point.

Yeah sounds likes the "music" track is shifted a few seconds compared to the "spoken" track.

Theres some audio balance issues about 5 min in, the game music overpowers Shane's voice for a little bit.

RoryDropkick

Is it just me, or is the intro kind of messed up? Edit: It seems like the intro snippet is playing in the middle of the intro music, followed by silence before the discussion actually starts. Then, the game music starts playing before Shane stops talking (about 5min in according to Dave, see below).

Ervin

I love Shane's enthusiasm, but it would be nice if he let Bob and Jeremy finish a sentence once and awhile.

Ryan Strehlow

yasss! been waiting for this one ever since you teased a few months ago. super curious to know your verdict on circle of the moon as I don't remember ever reading anything on it from either you or bob. I just finished it a couple of weeks ago for the first time and I kinda loved it. sure I played it on wii u with much better lighting and I do recognize that some of the enemies are kinda unbalanced and the cards maybe a bit too arbitrary to find, but for some reason none of that really bothered me as I blasted through the game in two three-hour sittings. plus I loved the boss designs and the overall artistic style of the game. the of course I have yet to play symphony of the night (don't ban me, I was a deluded nintendo purist well into the gamecube and never went back for ps until recently), so I don't have that term of comparison but I will tackle that starting next weekend. keep up the excellent job guys
