Retronauts East makes its debut with an Apple II discussion

We've talked about it, now we've made it happen. As part of the show's expansion to full-length weekly episodes, the Retronauts family is now joined by "Retronauts East," wherein I summon various and sundry fans of classic gaming based on the east coast (specifically in Raleigh NC) to gather together and discuss various topics. This week, Ben Elgin and Benj Edwards join me for a conversation about the Apple II computer.

I admit up front that the episode's a little rough. The recording equipment setup was missing a couple of key pieces (they literally arrived in the mail right after we finished recording), and this group still needs to find its comfortable groove. But it's a good start, and we'll smoothe over many of the problems next time. (Especially the intermittent audio distortions, which come from a component that I have since replaced.) So apologies for the slightly patchy audio quality, and please look forward to a more refined Retronauts East experience next month!

Description: It's the debut of Retronauts East as EST-based gaming experts Benj Edwards and Ben Elgin join Jeremy to discuss the Apple II computer platform: Its origins, its games, and its legacy.

We had Apple II e's. In my middle school labs, so good memories there. I'm hoping you keep this format up. Hopefully commodore 64 soon. It would be especially neat if you did a music episode since the c64 had such a great sound chip.

I very much enjoyed this episode, an Apple II being my first computer and where I played so many memorable games between the Atari years and the release of the NES.

Awesome episode! ... Also, being both a fan of games that require graph paper as well as old anime that comes with liner notes, I would be VERY excited to hear Robert Woodhead as a guest!

I feel like '90s PC is more than just a single episode. LOTS happening there.

Great episode! Hopefully one step closer to a full-blown 90s-era PC episode.

Dug the introduction of Retronauts East. Looking forward to more!

Ben and Benj are excellent additions to the Retronauts fold, bringing with them a fresh perspective from the programming and computing side of things. Very much forward to hearing more Retronauts East going forward!

I'm liking where this is going. Benj is really knowledgeable about his stuff!

one thing i have always noticed with your efforts is that they get better with time. a few rough edges at first are no big deal. thank you.

As an east coaster I heartily approve. What goal do we have to hit to bring back the call-in episodes!

I really enjoyed this episode. I know a fair amount about the American console market in the 70s and 80s but very little about the microcomputer side of things, so this was a pleasant dive. I basically forgot the Apple II was still going into the 90s, but it makes sense - I remember them still being in my elementary school computer lab during that time period. Looking forward to more Easts!

Yep, I specifically wanted to bring Benj aboard for his extensive knowledge of the early ’80s PC and American console market.

There are very few gaming history podcasts that go outside of the typical gamer fandom (NES and up) that are in any way informative or listenable. A lot of what I found (outside of the PC review review stuff from Dr. Sparkle) consists of terrible 9 year old Youtube series with more bad jokes than research or 5 minute podcasts that barely scratch the surface of the topic. Seriously, try to find anything that covers Wizardry, Might and Magic, or Ultima (I know about Spoony's series and think its interesting but its too AVGN-y and not very good) with any sense of authority. This was absolutely fantastic and I hope you can keep up this level of quality for a segment of gaming history that had been terribly neglected.

Awesome! Excited for the new show.

I wish we had limitless time and funding, too.

I wish you would make Retronuats minis, East, Radio, and a regular episode in a two week peroid

Super cool episode. My dad had an Apple IIe in the early 80s and I grew up lucky enough to have a computer in my home for as long as I remember. I still recall going to a store to buy a Galaga clone with him when I was maybe 5 called AE, and playing Escape from Rungistan with my brothers before we bought our NES in '89. Even though I was very young, even I could grasp how much of a Wild West mentality that people with computers had back then. My dad and my uncles all learned to program, and everyone was copying disks and games to pass around to each other, like our own bootleg copy of Choplifter like Benj mentioned. Lots of memories flooding back right now!
