A public service officer is basically those that provides community support and customer service, which includes administrative tasks such as issuing permits, distributing information to government officials and the public. So those with medical reasons will typically be exempted form active duty and assigned as public service officer instead, like Suho (he has injuries and poor eyesight), Baekhyun (has hypothyroidism) and Kai who is currently serving military (Kai has had back injuries and has gone for multiple surgeries) As for the rest, like Chanyeol was in special forces (dude is like a tank and underwent stamina, first aid and CBR training to get into special forces), D.O was the military chef (bcos he's good in cooking and has Korean cuisine cooking license), Chen was an active duty soldier and Xiumin (was an assistance drill instructor, only assigned to those with very high physical strength and drill scores, and reported to the special forces unit at DMZ). DMZ is the Korean Demilitarized Zone, which is a border barrier that was established to serve as a buffer zone between the countries of North Korea and South Korea, and possibly one of the heavily guarded places in the world given that it is jointly guarded by both South Korean and US Army.
