BC March Madness 2025 - Day 24

The Hot Monsters Who Fuck shall fuck no more (although Bram Stoker's Dracula is still in play as a main feed selection). Alan Moore moves on to the next round!

In today's match, the final face-off in our Patreon Sweet Sixteen, it's snowin' vs. "ssssssmoookinnnnn"

It's Christmas Coal vs. 90's Indie Comics.

Jacked JK Simmons is very impressive, I must say.

With Christmas Coal, we'd cover four holiday films that rank among the worst of all time:
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Santa Claus: The Movie
Fred Claus
Red One

With 90s Indie Comics, we'd cover six of the scumbummiest 90s movies featuring all of Ben's favorite weird guys (and one weird tank gal):
The Mask
The Crow
Tank Girl
Judge Dredd
Spawn
Dredd
(which came out in 2012 but David wants to cover it anyway)

Which will be the final franchise to move on to the Elite Eight?

Comments

So say we all!

Jeff Brax

Spawn is a movie i watched a weird number of times because, well, i was 11.

Alexi Belchere

Damn I didn’t get to vote for this. Did this one go up late? I feel like they forgot to update it

Chris Lynch

Counterpoint: the Cast list is God Tier.

Dave Pallas

That's one of the FINEST non lethal vehicles ever made!

Dave Pallas

I voted for 90s comics but I do think Christmas Coal is a strong category and should stay in consideration for the future

Olivia Haidar

I wonder if Atlantic David was in the Yemen chat...

Max Birdemic

Oh shit I missed that round who beat Pulp Heroes!? Ooooh right it was PKD. That's a helluva match up.

Chris Radicone

This one is so obvious. Glad we all agree. Tank Girl alone is enough of a reason to choose 90s indie comics. But each of the movies in that category are all I want to hear them cover.

Alek Gent-Vincent

You should just do Red One as it’s own thing. It’s pure evil, you don’t need a reason.

Dan Ludwig

Agreed 💯!

Jamey Bouwmeester

They mentioned in a previous episode that nothing has gotten over 80% yet.

Jamey Bouwmeester

I don't know, man. JK is lookin' like a pretty tasty snack up there.

Jamey Bouwmeester

Christmas Coal never fails to make me laugh as a category but I'm glad the right choice is winning

Jon Ryves

You could put the Clown from Spawn in that dress, I'm still voting for it over Red One.

Michael Bates

Mysterymen Comics No. 1 debuted on January 1, 1999

John W

And it bites all on its own

John W

In these trying times it’s good to know we can still agree on the basics

Moah Nartinez

Christmas coal dead in a ditch for real. Red one would be fun but the comics have heaps to talk about

Will McLaren

What?? No Barb Wire?? Dark Horse classic featuring a future Golden Globe nominee? I'm shocked!

Jonathan

Why is Christmas coal losing?!?

youngthugisthegreatestlivingrapper

Guaranteed major Ben presence during The Mask, Tank Girl, and Judge Dredd. All three are compatible for a porch watch.

Daniel Buckley

Yeah Ben loves slow christmas, but my man is gonna marry Tank Girl when he meets her

Benjamin Haworth

As it turns out the image used is everything in these votes

John Paul

Cameron Diaz in The Mask is top 10 best a human being has ever looked in a movie.

Timothy Wilson

well done, friends.

Liam

Ah, last week of March, the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano and Blankies ruin everyone's fun.

Marli McElroy

The people who voted for Christmas Coal are Mega-City One level depraved

Sauncho Smilax

90's Indie Comics are going all the way baby!

Wyatt Gray

90’s comics all day! Although I wouldn’t mind a one off where the just shred red one. Which is, in my opinion, a work of pure evil and a distillation of how big tech is destroying all art and humanity.

Mike Cook

Fulfill the Tank Girl prophecy

Fred Mercado

This is what happens when the pinned image is Cameron diaz in that dress

Blake Anderson

90s Indie Comics is so much more the vibe of the Patreon series. Finally a good result. I’d be happy if this takes it.

Anthony Regina

Easiest pick yet.

Div Whateley

Lmao yeesh what a blowout!

Aaron Shanley

I mean, David geeking out about Dredd sounds like a good time to me!

Michael Loiacono

Yea, he must work out!

David McElroy

I know this isn't the place but I just want to hear Griffin scream "I kick podcasts for the Lord!"

Rich

I’m starting to feel invested in the Indie Comics taking this thing. What an incredible line up, not just in terms of the movies themselves but the actors behind them and the incredible string of 90s soundtracks. Let’s do this! P-p-p-POW!

John Halski

Yyyyyyouch! Suck it, Santa!

Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)

What about Timecop?

Alexander L Hart

Wow. This is a beat down. What’s the biggest win ever?

Haze

Dredd is so much better than expected.

Abe Something

It's from one of the classic b&w indie comics of the 80s & 90s, Flaming Carrot. Just because they weren't the title characters doesn't mean it's not from an indie comic.

Patrick McEvoy

Does it bend the rules? The book (Flaming Carrot) was published during the '90s, and the film is from '99. So it should fit - and be included! :)

Patrick McEvoy

No Krampus? Suck it Santa

jahr

The addition of Dredd makes this a great list... but where in the HECK is Mystery Men? Don't we deserve that one too? And why is it missing? Also, PS: It's a tragedy the Flaming Carrot movie never got made - but at least we got this classic.

Patrick McEvoy

I suspect Santa’s gonna get crushed.

Jim Kopeny (Tankboy)

We should! It's a decade of OUR dreams too 😉

Chauncey Telese

@Les, it's based on some minor characters from the Flaming Carrot comic - that counts!

TimeGentleman

Crumb's not an adaptation. American Splendor is out of decade.

Regis L

I think Indie Comics would make for better conversation

Jordan Coleman

it's on the list for a sick day, i could see it hitting when be-flu'ed despite my insurmountable early teenage reaction

Regis L

Yes and we actually need to petition that it gets included

Anthony Pierre Coco

Those are Pulp Heroes

Zack Stoudemayer

Pulp Heroes was another series in the bracket that got beat in round 1. Was Dick Tracy, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer & The Spirit

Anthony Pierre Coco

No Herkimer Battle Jitney ??!

Sweetjimmyt

How come no Phantom or The Shadow??

Edward Marks

Still a good movie.

Chauncey Telese

Mystery Men belong in 90s indie comics no?

Chauncey Telese

Hmmm does Crumb fall into the 90's comic book movie bracket??? American Splendor slightly outside of it? Or is this... a hero indie comic bracket.

Alex Firer

For the win

David Rosenblatt

I'd love a Santa Claus the Movie commentary (its a VERY strange film), but not enough to also have to deal with Red One and Fred Claus.

John Szolscek

we burned all our clout asking for Mary Reilly and now we don't get Mr Furious or The Sphinx! Shit!

overthebw

They appeared in Flaming Carrot, arguably the 90est of 90s comics though I realize most ppl will be looking for MacFarlane type comics

Scott Marshall

Christmas Coals getting a lump of coal from the Check Mates…

Charles

Christmas Coal and David Lean atomized by the polls this year.

Tomas Marinara

To quote Our Finest Film Critic: “Hotchie Motchie”

Adam Mincks

Mystery Men please! We can bend the rules to include this Really Interesting Film.

Blaine Fiedler

SCUM-BUM-A-GO-GO, BAYBEEEE

Remy

Probably because they saw the movie

Scott Marshall

Worth it for the Karl Urban Dredd alone

Scott Marshall

There’s only One vote to make here… gimmie 90s baby!

Reuben

Another petition to add Mystery Men to the 90s Indie Comics series.

Andrew

pavlovian vote here thanks to the picture.

David McElroy

90s indie comics to win it, all in

Beef Steak Tomato

Bob Burden dislikes this

Tyler Jennes

It doesn’t have an original comic which I think is a prerequisite.

Les Chappell

If we're sneakin' movies, ya gotta sneak Ghost World in there.

Zwoozy

We're on the same page. Nice, blankies.

Tom

I think the problem is it’s not based on an actual comic. :(

Les Chappell

Thank God

Lukas Ridge

It’s going to stomp everything, I called it from minute one.

Les Chappell

Gotta keep the Violator bit going. Also, Dredd is easily the best film in this matchup.

Miles Lemaire

Good question. Are they saving for the inevitable Kinka Usher main feed series?

Regis L

Red one commentary could be an all timer

Andrew Middlebrook

90s Indie Comics was definitely under seeded. The selection committee did not not take strength of schedule into account.

Jim B

disappointed to see that nobody wants to bite the bullet on Red One after months of Red One bits

Blake R.

Gotta add mystery men!

DM

mystery men please for 90s indie!

Lena Delaney

I've been asking myself this exact thing since they announced the movies for this category.

Andrew Hartsell

Begging for a little coal in my stocking

Patrick Fisackerly

Tank girl took out my last want so I'm here all the way. We can be beautiful! We can be magnificent! We can figure this shit out!!

Sloane

Time for Christmas Coal to burn.

Holden Martinson

Wait cameron diaz was 22 when the mask came out?

Alexi Belchere

what are the chances we could get Mystery Men in 90s indie comics

jack read

Sad to see Christmas Coal getting crushed. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is one of my favorite Christmas films.

Sean

“It can’t rain all the time.”

Tobey

Should be a bloodbath

Timo Supremo

Thank goodness for these results right now

Misadventureland

Sorry this is a no brainer. 90s indie comics is god tier selection

Jake Nolan

I hope that this is just scorched earth and 90s indie comics has a clean walk to the next round. Easiest vote of the entire month

Harry Kolmer

first again

lil rob

Vote Christmas Coal, you naughty bastards!

Njord

🎄

Austin McDougle

Decade of Dredds!

Del Lorenson

Why not mystery men too if 90s comic indie movies win?

Dave Pallas

The Mask felt MONUMENTAL when it came out when I was 16. I yearn for your reactions.
