BC March Madness 2025 - Day 18

WICK GOT DICKED. HARD.

Philip K. Dick adaptations move on to the Elite Eight!

Up today, we've got a bunch of young adults getting systematically killed off in increasingly clever and self-aware ways.

It's Scream vs Final Destination.

With Scream, we'd cover six films:
Scream (1996)
Scream 2 (1997)
Scream 3 (2000)
Scream 4 (2011)
Scream (2022)
Scream VI (2023)

With Final Destination, we'd cover six films (the next installment is slotted for release this May):
Final Destination (2000)
Final Destination 2 (2003)
Final Destination 3 (2006)
The Final Destination (2009)
Final Destination 5 (2011)
Final Destination Bloodlines (2025)

So, which spooky scary franchise takes it?

Comments

Like both series but way more famos in the scream series and the movies are more distinct so it’s probably a more podable group imo

JB

I wanted to say the same thing - but then I realised that I would do the same if a franchise of Western movies won. It's not necessarily a "comfort zone" thing... sometimes a genre just isn't for you.

Literaltruth

Listen don't watch.

Zach Neal

Why tho? Step outside of your comfort zone, you might have fun!

Creighton Budris

This is so funn!! ROUND 2 BABY

sheabobay

I've got this increasing sense of foreboding that a horror franchise is going to be the winner, in which case the question becomes do I just stay of the Patreon feed for that month or do I also suspend my subscription for that duration as well?

John W

Agreed I like both series, but they’re both bad for this format, because there isn’t enough variation between films. The episodes would grow really lifeless as they move into the back half of these franchises.

Drew K

Thinking about them just having a regular conversation interrupted by screaming in laughter and disgust at an insane Rube Goldberg-cum-Itchy & Scratchy death is just so amusing to me.

Anthony Regina

Now THIS is a matchup made for me that is an immensely hard decision.

Anthony Regina

One of those rounds where I'm still voting but really just waiting for them both to lose so as to return to more interesting options.

Rob Bowman

All the lame people in middle school liked Final Destination

Daniel R

I just think that horror series’ like Elm Street or Final Destination, that are both high concept and rely more on the elaborate set piece kills (as opposed to character and atmosphere), have the makings of an ideal series. At the very least, having something crazy happen every 10 minutes will help keep the guys alert and on-topic.

KevynOnVideo

I don’t understand this take at all, each of the movies plays with form even more than the one before, functioning as commentary on genre, sequels, franchise-dom, fandom, and more. It’s clever-as-hell cinephilia disguised as slasher movies

Chloe Jade Skye

But once griff has SEEN them he’ll be more enticed to repeatedly pitch a Wes Craven series

Chloe Jade Skye

5 is lowkey a masterpiece

Chloe Jade Skye

Final Destination movies are a blast, but there is SO much more fascinating behind-the-scenes convo to have about the Scream franchise, especially knowing Griff has never seen any of them. Glad most of y’all seem to agree :)

Chloe Jade Skye

Final Destination would make such a better and more entertaining commentary series. Let’s be so for real! 😭

XTINABE

Final destination only has at most 5 actors worth talking about across the whole franchise. And that’s if you include David Koechner

Alexander Annand

Scream!!!!!

Good

ABSTAIN

Christopher Teuma

Well you’re correct haha, yeah

Rad Rodge

i'll scream for final destination.

Javier Alcácer

With this comic heavy March Madness I don't see either of these going all the way unfortunately. ::insert Simpsons "Prove me Wrong" meme::

Chris Radicone

Literally my personal nightmare fuel.

Chris Radicone

Whisper to a scream

Chris Lynch

Solely for the Griff of it.

Jordan Gibson

This is just too difficult a choice for me. I want you to cover both. Both are worthy.

Rob Bliss

U guys are insane and clearly have never seen Final Destination 5

Marie

There’s no cool backstories to the FD franchise. You people are crazy relegating the scream franchise to some commentaries. As fun as they’ll be they need full dossiers for the first 4 minimum.

dorium

I think this is the thing a lot of people miss about the commentaries -- unless it's a film they know a lot about (e.g. Toy Story, Turtles, Trek, Marvel), a lot of the commentary track is reactions and tangents unrelated to the film Scream has a lot of interesting metacommentary about the industry and idk how tapped into that the guys are without research, while FD is just reactions the whole time

Andy C

How can FD fall behind in this? Never seen the appeal of Scream past the first one

Harrison Cordle

And yet there's no Scream 5

Jeffrey Malone

You can't relegate Scream 3 to a commentary ep. That episode needs a JJ dossier. That movie is the start of Craven's third act and it's maybe the height of his battle with the MPAA, a commentary wouldn't do it justice, you need it in the context of his career

Mike Finnerty

Hollywood, uh.....finds a way.

Ryan Baker

I'm very much a fan of the first Scream, but I think the Final Destination films would make for a much more fun set of commentaries. Scream might be fun if anyone on the pod doesn't know who dun it. But then, you can also have fun guessing how they'll have it dun to 'em in FD.

zero

if you don't keep making them, how can you fire people for having leftist opinions?

Zachary Neeley

I literally didn't know there was a Scream 4, let alone 6.

Ryan Baker

These are probably my two favorite modern horror franchises, but I think there's more meat on the bone, discussion-wise, with the Scream franchise. Each Scream is essentially a murder mystery, while Final Destination is a slasher film with the same slasher ---death ---every time. They don't ever really do anything super creative with this ---e.g., an actual murderer tries to blame the deaths on fate, etc.---the premise is identical and executed in near identical ways. Scream also has a much more interesting cast of actors throughout its five films than the Final Destination series, which generally employed the cheapest, Canadian-est actors they could find. Scream's plot is also far more byzantine and self-referential (obviously) than the Destination movies. They're also remarkably consistent with their canon. There's a whole lot of untangling to do with the story in Scream, while Final Destination sort of gives up on the mythology after introducing a lot of weird ideas in Final Destination 2. I think the one area where Final Destination probably beats Scream as far as discussion fodder goes is the range of quality. Scream is great, and then the other 4 are all "pretty good." Some people say Scream 2 is the best and that Scream 3 is easily the worst, but there are no huge missteps or wild steps in direction. Final Destination has a much more interesting quality curve. Final Destination 1 is great, Final Destination 2 is weirder and worse, Final Destination 3 is especially bananas, with a "choose your own adventure" DVD version that let's you end the move in 12 minutes by ignoring the protagonist's prophecy, Final Destination 4 is an abomination, and then Final Destination 5 is maybe the most fun of the series, with a really fun, twist at the end. That said, on a scene-by-scene basis, the Final Destination movies are generally more fun to watch than they are to discuss, while I think Scream might be more fun to discuss than it is to watch.

Sassy Little Imp

FINAL D! What is left to say about Scream? Let's hear some background and context on Final D?!

nothing

FD all day

Josh Harvey

SPIKE AND SCREAM

David Rosenblatt

Final Destination has a very scary Plane Crash scene so if you want to hear David spooked this is the commentary series for you

Leo Martin

Talking about West Craven I'm in

Tom

What the what?! Blankies have lost their damned minds with this voting. Griffin and David could just record the same podcast 6 times and Ben can just edit in different names. **save for the controversy surrounding part 6. at least w/the FD movies, you get unique, sometimes Rube-Golderg-esque deaths-- even if they're silly at times. Creativity vs carbon copying a bona fide classic.

Sean Sakimae

Scream isn’t that good…. It the same gag over and over again. It trash that pretends to be more than it is because the first was a slightly better version of a movie that was in the nightmare series. Saw the original in theaters, saw 2 and 3 as well in theaters. Everything after 2 is bad and not in a fun way. Final destination always knew what it was and played to that well. Not all are great but they all have something in them.

Ben Brown

Kevin Williamson is directing this one. It would be irresponsible not to cover it.

Jason Feffer

Gotta have faith

Josh Burcham

Final destination is so fun.. It's gonna get fucking bodied by scream

Brendan Radigan

I’m choosing Final Destination to spite all the Scream fans who made Nightmare on Elm Street lose

Tashmon Dimps

It's the best one!

Graham Parker

I Scream! You Scream! We all Scream! For Scream!

Njord

I look forward to getting pissy when they don't like Scream 4 as much as I do!

PresidentOfWhat

FIRST!

justn

Gourly and Rust is the GOAT of horror franchise podcasts!

Josh Burcham

Easiest choice yet, honestly.

Steve Runyon

Exactly!

Josh Burcham

Man after Final Destination barely defeated Exorcist it will really suck for it to lose now. Such a creative horror franchise, new one coming soon, consistently entertaining, and one of the greatest achievements in slasher history as a franchise that never really loses its way. Even it's worst entry nails the formula. Scream I'm almost certain will have it's time in the sun with the blank check crew but if Final Destination doesn't win, it could be over a decade before the opportunity comes back up

Josh Burcham

Scream sweep all the way

Turner Miller

I agree, though I’d love for them to talk about them, I don’t want to leave the door open for 7

Aoife

I don’t think Scream should get any attention after Spyglass fired Melissa Barrera, or at least there should be a promise that Scream 7 or any further instalments aren’t covered

Ben Jones

Final Destination is absolutely perfect for commentary, and Wes Craven seems inevitable fodder for a miniseries eventually

EliotFairbanks

Voting Final Destination because I haven't listed to Gourley and Rust's Final Destination miniseries, and so I would be getting two pod series for the price of one

youngthugisthegreatestlivingrapper

Final Destinatiooooooon

Olivia Haidar

This is my Sophie’s choice.

Jake Jarvi

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIII

Darby Dixon III

Cover the Scream MTV show on Patreon you cowards

Eric Spratling

This is tough

Snoogens

I know scream will win because of all the inside baseball meta obsessions in that franchise, but Final Destination is such a fun set of movies, and I want to listen to the friends recount all the Rube Goldberg kills. Cry for me, Argentina.

Maxathon

Both would be entertaining but I'm going with Final. If only because at some point Scream has to be covered eventually

Jordan Coleman

Final Destination movies are so much more fun, prime for commentaries

Austin McDougle

My two favorite horror franchises! My heart!

Rory Dunn

Now that 7 is being filmed I’d rather hold off on Scream till next year and bask in a new Final Destination in 2025!
