Amblin' / Night Gallery / Columbo
Added 2025-01-11 05:00:04 +0000 UTC
In our first of 4(??) Steven Spielberg related bonus episodes we are tackling his short film and TV works as we discuss his short film Amblin’, Columbo (S1E3, Murder by the Book), and Night Gallery ((Pilot) Eyes and (S1E7) Make Me Laugh)
Other topics include: Drew Carey of course, an update on Ben’s hippie preferences, Griff’s Euphoria casting and firing, Watermelon Man, themed restaurants, omelette talk and more.

Currently obsessed with Columbo, so this episode slapped.
Has anyone directed the boys yet to the Mrs ‘Arris Goes to Paris” Easter egg in the Janet Leigh episode “Forgotten Lady”?

I’m looking forward to the discussion about the rides.
That ET attraction is one of my favorites, and I don’t like the movie. You can easily go on it multiple times in a row with very little wait. ☺️

As mentioned, it’s easy to watch this episode and look for seminal moments of Spielberg greatness, but the following episode is full of extremely stylish clever touches.

If David is serious about a 00s video game pod I'd absolutely volunteer to talk about Conkers Bad Fur Day

Everytime Prescription: Murder was mentioned my mind went to the Dick Van Dyke 90s show Diagnosis:Murder.

I really hope March Madness this year comes down to the entirety of The Drew Carrey Show vs the entirety of Columbo!
Ok not not really. But I sincerely would love if after a rewatch you guys picked like top 5 Columbo favorites, or each pick 2, and covered it. That was a fun listen.

Does anybody know what the hell this is? Short, very funny ‘behind scenes’ of young Spiely directing on the Universal lot while his crew bitch and moan. It is extremely well done, with feel of Funny or Die or Doc Now but doesn’t seem to be either?

The Joan Crawford talk made me think of this recent, very silly Turner Classic Movies video https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDfKse1vJVJ/

The Night Gallery Pilot video appears to have been taken down. Does anyone have an alternative?

As far as Columbos jurisdiction, he also gets involved in a case in England in season 2 and I'm currently watching an ep in season 4 where he's on a cruise ship and Dean Stockwell shows up for the second time as a different person

I can neither confirm nor deny that you can find the ‘lost/Youtube deleted’ Spiely dystopian 1971 TV movie that Griffin talks about at the following link. (I’ll leave it there for a week or so…)

Love gettin a healthy dose of Serling chatter in this one. Night Gallery is pretty spotty but I’d highly recommend eps ‘The Caterpillar’ and ‘Class of 99.’ Third season is atrocious but first two have some gems. Also, this is one of Guillermo del Toro’s favorite shows and his commentaries on the DVDs are great, well worth seeking out.

I'd recommend "Inside No. 9" as something recent that's successfully in the Night Gallery/Twilight Zone pocket with a sense of play instead of going full "Black Mirror" depress-o-fest. Check it out. You'll be glad you did.

Columbo is SO good and has SO many fantastic actors playing antagonists throughout its run. Griffin especially should watch the one with John Cassavetes! BC boys do a Columbo Patreon series in 2025?????

It was in my Apple podcast app earlier this morning and then disappeared when I tried to download it, so I reckon they needed to upload a new file or something. I’m sure it’ll be up later today. 🙂
