MARCH MADNESS 2024 - Day 21
Added 2024-03-21 16:00:12 +0000 UTCDamn, that pie got f*cked yesterday, and not in a good way. Adam Sandler moves on to the next round!
Up today - George of the Jungle vs Hugh Grant of 10 Downing St.
It's LIVE ACTION JAY WARD vs RICHARD CURTIS ROM COMS.
I crack myself up sometimes.
With JAY WARD, we'd cover the three live-action adaptations from our childhood:
Rocky & Bullwinkle
George of the Jungle
Dudley Do-Right
With RICHARD CURTIS ROMCOMS, we'd cover five of his most beloved scripts:
The Tall Guy
Four Weddings & A Funeral
Notting Hill
Love Actually
About Time
Do you prefer your chaos to be of the "Robert De Niro with a monocle" variety? Or of the "Mr. Bean shoving a bunch of potpourri into a cellophane gift bag" kind?
Comments
Robert de Niro playing a cartoonish Russian spy... Do you need more than that?!?
John Machala
2024-03-22 13:51:25 +0000 UTCWoof. I suppose the bright side is that Jay Ward is almost an inevitability.
Liam Boyle
2024-03-22 11:35:59 +0000 UTCI just started watching Blackadder, so go Curtis I guess!
Evelyn Chavanne
2024-03-22 06:25:57 +0000 UTCThose lunch orders really transport me to New York 😍
Bairbre
2024-03-22 05:31:29 +0000 UTCWe already covered Yesterday (aka the movie that brought the end of days) so we really should cover the rest of Richard Curtis's cursed films!
Nick Gerber
2024-03-22 04:23:44 +0000 UTCRespectfully disagree, but always great to see more women and LGBTQ+ individuals enjoy this podcast as well. ☺️ I always recommend this show to my friends. 💙

2024-03-22 00:28:28 +0000 UTCMore comforting than NOSTALGIA FOR CARTOONS?!
Will McLaren
2024-03-22 00:19:09 +0000 UTCFuck all those rom coms. George of the Jungle says everything there is to say about human relationships.
Will McLaren
2024-03-22 00:17:36 +0000 UTCGeorge doesn’t deserve this
Betty Vaughan Granberg
2024-03-21 22:59:12 +0000 UTCRichard Curtis is a win for love.
Amanda's Picture Show A Go Go
2024-03-21 22:44:26 +0000 UTCAbout Time will be a great episode, even if I have to listen to a bunch of over-heated reactions to Love Actually.
Lukas Ridge
2024-03-21 22:38:19 +0000 UTCIt's gotta be Bullwinkle
zack albun
2024-03-21 22:19:05 +0000 UTCWhat are people’s Finals predictions? I’m predicting Tabletop Games vs Happy Madison. And if that’s right, I have NO idea who wins. You?
Michael Curley
2024-03-21 22:10:51 +0000 UTCGosh, that does sound fun
Zwoozy
2024-03-21 21:59:44 +0000 UTCThis is fucking insane.
Don Knott Steiner
2024-03-21 21:00:56 +0000 UTCI'll go with an Ernest write in vote for this match up.
CT13
2024-03-21 21:00:06 +0000 UTCI'd much rather discuss the Rise of Brendan Fraser and the fall of De Niro than listen to a Notting Hill episode, honestly.
Kyle Martinak
2024-03-21 20:54:24 +0000 UTCNone of the Richard Curtis films have aged well that will be the theme. Jay Ward films have crazy trivia
Zak Marrinan
2024-03-21 20:40:08 +0000 UTCand now for a matchup you'll really enjoy
Patrick Mike
2024-03-21 20:26:59 +0000 UTCJay Ward will be way more fun!!! We're not voting on which movies are better, we're voting on what we want to listen to podcasts about!!! Come onnn!!
R. Grossman
2024-03-21 20:12:54 +0000 UTCI keep having the same conflict in every Curtis vote.
Chad Perry
2024-03-21 19:48:56 +0000 UTCI agree, Curtis would be incredibly cozy and comforting!
Mitch Thompson
2024-03-21 19:08:40 +0000 UTCA vote for Rocky and Bullwinkle is a vote for my childhood.

2024-03-21 19:05:12 +0000 UTCCurtis 🥱
Matt Greenberg
2024-03-21 18:48:35 +0000 UTCI hope that if the Richard Curtis movies win they make sure to get some British guests on so that it's not just three guys who have always lived in the USA talking about London, a place none of them have ever been to.
Literaltruth
2024-03-21 18:43:40 +0000 UTCI don't know why I keep voting for my beloved Richard Curtis movies when it will only hurt me to hear David unload on Love Actually
Emily Scott
2024-03-21 18:41:46 +0000 UTCThe Dudley Do-Right POD would be so fantastically, marvelously BUGNUTS. I’ll take that over hemming and hawing about how well some of the Curtis material has aged (or not)
Jake Yosafat
2024-03-21 18:20:16 +0000 UTCcannot express how disappointed I am that Edgar Wright of all people is beating Holofcener rn. Do your due diligence and vote people!

2024-03-21 18:16:56 +0000 UTCY'all have no taste. No taste I say!
Bill
2024-03-21 18:10:13 +0000 UTCI don't want either of these to be inflicted on us.
Ryan Baker
2024-03-21 18:09:04 +0000 UTCThis was also when some of realized we liked George AND Jane (or whatever Leslie Mann was called)
Anthony Pierre Coco
2024-03-21 17:53:38 +0000 UTCI have strong feelings for Richard Curtis, just none of them are for his movie work. Vicar of Dibley friggin rules, though
Anthony Pierre Coco
2024-03-21 17:51:38 +0000 UTCI can't wait for David's ire towards Love Actually and to hear the guys talk about how much of a guarantor FWAAF is.
Jennifer Levine
2024-03-21 17:25:15 +0000 UTCGoing with Jay Ward. I have zero strong feelings on Richard Curits. I'm just not into the idea of people dismantling his weird movies. And even the possibility of a contentious Notting Hill episode (a movie I haven't seen) does not appeal to me at all.
Holden Martinson
2024-03-21 17:21:16 +0000 UTCAbout time is great. Yay for Richard Curtis.
Sean McP
2024-03-21 17:20:05 +0000 UTCMe too!
Jeff Brax
2024-03-21 17:09:38 +0000 UTCIf either of these wins I will be very sad
Nikki Lev
2024-03-21 17:07:44 +0000 UTCI’ve heard enough takes on Love, Actually that I’m actually full up until the end of my life thank you. Ward!
Roxanne Harvey
2024-03-21 16:53:30 +0000 UTCthis comment convinced me to vote for jay ward

2024-03-21 16:48:59 +0000 UTCI don’t think I’ve seen it since 1991 but I love, love, loved it at the time.

2024-03-21 16:31:54 +0000 UTCOnly voting Curtis because of the magnificent and underseen The Tall Guy.
Elliot Cowan
2024-03-21 16:31:31 +0000 UTCI’m here and I agree!
Maureen Tango
2024-03-21 16:31:12 +0000 UTCWhen I worked as a snow sports instructor that movie was always on in the room for some reason. I’ve probably seen it start to finish only twice but have a good 100 hours viewing time on it as a whole.
Matt
2024-03-21 16:30:50 +0000 UTCYour comment is when it clicked that this mini-series would be looking at About Time, not In Time. Which did strike me as odd when it came up in the first round.
zero
2024-03-21 16:29:17 +0000 UTCGeorge of Jungle please. I refuse to ever watch love actually again
Jake
2024-03-21 16:29:10 +0000 UTClet's GOOOO vote dicky c!!!

2024-03-21 16:27:38 +0000 UTC“Local filmmaker Ishmahil Blagrove even accused Michell and Curtis of purposefully editing out the diverse array of local extras he’d gathered for the film. Notting Hill put the London district on the map in a global way, creating a major tourist industry centered around the movie. But it also painted a limited portrait of the area and drastically sped up the process of gentrification.” - https://www.avclub.com/notting-hill-brought-two-rom-com-titans-together-1842910191
Manish Agarwal
2024-03-21 16:25:08 +0000 UTCThe Jaw Ward commentaries would be nothing but talking about their lunch orders
Ryan Jenkins
2024-03-21 16:24:59 +0000 UTCI'd truly enjoy both, but I wish that if Curtis wins that Four Weddings and a Funeral is removed(sub something in?). A Mike Newell mini-series would be a crazy 4 movie run that starts with a forgotten kids horse adventure, before Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, and Harry Potter 4(Goblet of Fire).
Daniel Jacobs
2024-03-21 16:24:06 +0000 UTCThe Jay Ward movies being listed out of chronological order throughout this thing has really driven me up a wall.
Chris
2024-03-21 16:23:07 +0000 UTCGeorge, George, George of the Jungle, friend to you and me!
Michele
2024-03-21 16:22:59 +0000 UTCEmily explained: “A lot of people were saying that the film is completely whitewashed, and that it doesn’t show any of the ethnic diversity that the locals of Notting Hill are so proud of. “Almost everyone said they consider Notting Hill to be a diverse area, which combats the presentation of the film with all-white main characters and pretty much all white peripheral characters. “It romanticizes Notting Hill, quite vastly, and gives a very sanitized image of a spotless area when in real life it is not by any means.” - https://www.swlondoner.co.uk/life/26022021-notting-hill-residents-believe-the-hugh-grant-classic-fails-to-capture-west-londons-diversity
Manish Agarwal
2024-03-21 16:20:49 +0000 UTCBased on the 3-minute Love Actually speed-review session during the March Madness update, that would really be an all-time great episode. Also would very much enjoy Ben's take on "Is it raining? I hadn't noticed." Wet but still bad?
Janine Liberty
2024-03-21 16:19:34 +0000 UTC"Only Curtis could write a movie about Notting Hill, London's most diverse borough, and not feature a single black face in it." - https://www.theguardian.com/film/2009/mar/22/richard-curtis-the-boat-that-rocked
Manish Agarwal
2024-03-21 16:18:42 +0000 UTCVote Jay Ward. Make the entire crew try and do George of the Jungle yells. Also, the Rocky & Bullwinkle commentary would be unhinged.
Matt Reifschneider
2024-03-21 16:18:07 +0000 UTCAbout Time is great, Love Actually would be a hilarious ep
Jackson Clark
2024-03-21 16:13:59 +0000 UTCThe Jay ward films should also include the movie Boris and Natasha from the early 90s. I think it was a tv movie but I watched it a lot as a kid. It’s got a stacked cast
David McCallum
2024-03-21 16:11:57 +0000 UTCYou crack me up sometimes too, Marie
Riley M
2024-03-21 16:11:42 +0000 UTCnot a girlie but can confirm for the gays.

Rita Jefferson
2024-03-21 16:10:42 +0000 UTCvote Love Actually to cause the two friends to have a literal on-mike breakdown
Jon Ryves
2024-03-21 16:10:39 +0000 UTCThe Notting Hill rant will be similarly excellent
Erin
2024-03-21 16:10:38 +0000 UTCRichard Curtis is the only way to go here folks
Michael Palmer
2024-03-21 16:10:32 +0000 UTCI feel like romcoms are consistently great episodes whether the movie is good or terrible
Michael Hollenbeck
2024-03-21 16:10:29 +0000 UTCHere for me and the other 10 girlies in the Patreon, as I assume we all had the same sexual awakening to George of the Jungle

2024-03-21 16:10:01 +0000 UTCCan't believe I might vote against a Piper Perabo vehicle...

Joe Leija
2024-03-21 16:09:04 +0000 UTCI'm voting mostly for Ben, and sometimes for Griffin, but today I vote for David and cast my ballot for Richard Curtis
Luke Crawford
2024-03-21 16:08:59 +0000 UTCThe Richard Curtis movies have rom com classics, huge movie star talk, and the sure to be epic Love Actually episode! Do right and Rocky will just be a lot of WHATS HAPPENING?! (Which is still fun don’t get me wrong)

2024-03-21 16:07:57 +0000 UTCRichard Curtis please!!! Although they’re not doing the best one (The Boat That Rocked) so like choose that other guy I guess
Zoe Smith
2024-03-21 16:07:56 +0000 UTCIf you don’t want a Rocky & Bullwinkle commentary I’m not sure what you’re doing here
Joe Brady
2024-03-21 16:07:55 +0000 UTCThe Ward ones would make for better commentaries on average and there’s fewer of them!
Kevin Love Hewitt
2024-03-21 16:07:48 +0000 UTCJay Ward mini series is more interesting but I REALLY want to hear David tear into Love Actually
Keira Q
2024-03-21 16:07:44 +0000 UTCGuys. We need British actor gossip from the 90s, not more sad flops
Blake Anderson
2024-03-21 16:07:36 +0000 UTCDo right, Do-Right! Vote Ward!
Ross Kroeber
2024-03-21 16:06:14 +0000 UTCi don't understand the appeal of the curtis movies at all, but maybe it's because i've only seen the dreadful last two rather than the prior three.
