2024-02-14 12:11:34 +0000 UTCRe: 13th Floor. It comes from the same source as Fassbinder's German TV miniseries World on a Wire currently playing on Criterion Channel. I found it really engrossing and was quite impressed with how cyberpunk this early 1970s production was. I think David would really dig it for its Matrix connectivity. I saw the 13th Floor back when it was released and was not impressed but also have no real memories of it. I am curious to revisit to see how dealt with the same material as World on a Wire 25 years later (and in the same year as the Matrix)

2023-12-07 15:48:52 +0000 UTCOne thing I don’t think was mentioned as a reason why Austin Powers became such a huge hit even though the first film wasn’t a box office juggernaut is, Mike Meyers hosted the 1997 MTV Music Awards. I was 15 y/o at the time and distinctly remember how cool and culturally significant those awards were to my generation. The MTV movie awards wave was cresting at that time, and that award show was one of the best. They closed the show with “Austin Powers” singing “BBC”. At the time I had not seen Austin Powers in theaters , but seeing the character end the 1997 mtv music awards made me go seek out a copy at blockbuster. I think that’s something overlooked when talking about how Austin Powers exploded

And to tie it into movies, the song "God Give Me Strength" was written for Grace from the Heart! Elvis and Burt were *inseparable* at the time The Spy Who Shagged Me was released, it's like if an early 2010s movie had a Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga cameo; it might seem odd decades from now, but they were frequent collaborators at the time
