Naqoyqatsi

BC:SF has reached the third and final installment in the Qatsi trilogy! But how does Naqoyqatsi: Life as War stand apart from any other movie we've covered on the podcast? Why is it so hard to watch? What was Godfrey Reggio on when he made this? Griffin, David, and Ben try to answer these questions and so much more!

Movie starts at...2:09

Comments

After listening to most of the episode, supported by your comment, I am watching it on Dailymotion in the background. Music good, visuals bad. Might be better on an old crt screen

Andrew Dorschner

Maybe Naqoyqatsi doesn’t age well and it’s really one of those “you had to be there when it first came out and be in art school and be eating lots of acid” kind of movies

JC

I just realized I referenced the joke wrong and it doesn’t work. I’m sorry.

Stan

Naqoyqatsi makes Powaqqatsi look like Koyaanisqatsi

Stan

I paid $3.99 to rent Naqoyqatsi. Don’t be like me.

Ben Schultz

Gonna chime in kinda late here to say that this is my favorite ep of the whole catalog, hands down. Listened twice thus far. A delightful dang ass rollercoaster through ya'lls annoyance.

Richard Mason

Laugh Riot. That bone sounded DRY.

Casey Dominguez

I hate to admit it but this commentary track has now given Naqoyqatsi a reason to exist.

Devin DiMattia

Griffin trying to guess Bad Company was perhaps the most painful five minutes to listen to in patron history

Derrek Drass

I dont even want them to do Sonnenfeld. Just Van Helsing would be cool

Joshua Austin

As someone who's wanted them to do sonnenfeld since the March madness, I am gonna be perfectly fine with them just covering what they want lol. It's their show!

jktimberlake

If Godfrey came out and said “I was trying to make a movie for people who have bad taste”, would it be good?

Andy P

your second sentence seems to admit that Godfrey failed at what he was going for in your first sentence.

Malcolm

“Did he work on it for a while?” 💀

Erik Michaelson

I kind of enjoyed Bad Company, and I watched it recently

Kevin Fennell

Okay I wasn’t sure if these three movies were necessarily good Blank Check fodder because of the non-traditional narrative. Honestly I think that may be what made these the perfect commentary tracks.

Alexis Boursier (Bore-See-A)

Every scene described in this episode sounds like the most hackey political cartoon imaginable. "There's a rocket...it says 'news'...there's Hilter..."

Michael Hashizume

That was Billy Graham not Jerry Fallwell

David Dein

A movie about war… on the eyeballs. 👀 Still had a great time tho

Philip Ehlke

Should I watch the trilogy in backwards order for peak enjoyment?

Joshua Ochoa

More like Nap-oyqatsi… am I right?

Joshua Ochoa

Not one mention of my fave film of 2002.. A Walk To Remember

Sarah Farrell

Love the view but it does feel like a green screen

Erin Shaw

Wow TIL that Ben used to work on the same floor as me at Spotify

Erin Shaw

Can I make a kindly request that whenever there's a recommendation to lock the gates Griffin texts all of us here on Patreon ??

Sarah Farrell

Baraja is amazing.

Aram Freeman

I think this is my favorite Patreon commentary the boys have done

Nathan Guinn

What they really should have watched were the films made by Ron Fricke, the cinematographer of Koyaanisqatsi, they reveal he was as instrumental to that film's artistic success as Reggio. Chronos, Baraka, Samsara, all better than the latter two Qatsi's.

Dennis Rowland

So I know why the boys hated it, based on the whole day doing these, but I think this rules. I think this is only funny because it’s 2023. But no one can help that.

Anthony Regina

Makes sense now why I couldn't find this on tubi with the other ones.

Justin Peterson

Bill Nighy is always great. Basically the only part of Love Actually that I haven’t tired of.

Donald W Pratt

I appreciate the perspective of naqoyqatsi fans but y'all are cuckoo

Jordan B. Anderson

Suck an egg!? In this economy!?

Thomas Dempsey

Yea im hugely down with Naqoyqatsi and think a lot of its apparent fakeness and ugliness is purposeful. Not in a "bad on purpose" way but in showing that beauty isnt really being found in a culture so entrenched in a digital environment. There is beauty in the film if youre down with that really specific Y2K aesthetic tho. If your heart goes aflutter when the like dial up connection sound plays at the climax of Pulse lol

Joshua Austin

Naqoyqatsi is straight up brilliant. A digital demise. Its ugly veneer showcases the vapitidy of consumerism. It probably sucks though when you've watched two Qatsi movies in a single sitting beforehand.

Conor Bresnan

oh boy i love when they watch a stinker
