Based on David’s theory, I feel Persephone is another CAPTCHA program. But the kind that wants personal data. Instead of mother maiden name or the street you lived on as a kid, she wants to know how much Neo loves Trinity. Nothing more personal than that. Think it makes sense because then immediately after, she reveals the Keymaker, because information was verified.

“If a machine made a movie for us we wouldn’t like it.” Is a very prescient quote in retrospect

One of your best Commentary tracks. Bravo! When Sims cooks he fucking sizzles.

I love all four Matrix films. All masterful in their own wacky and ingenius ways.

Ben “nah man”-ing David’s accusations of Malibu’s Most Wanted fandom is the most Joe Dirt he’s ever sounded .

Long time listener, first time poster—got piqued by the guy’s discussion of why Smith bothers to go after Neo again and again, and whether or not Smith has free will. My thought is that Smith behaves like a computer “virus”, but more like a biological virus. His motivation, once liberated from his original function, is simply to survive, and he has an innate sense that replicating himself increases his chances of survival. He’s sort of like a bio weapon , a weaponized version of a program that, when unchecked, becomes a problem not only for its intended target, but for everyone on the field of battle, because he’s no longer targeted, he’s just an unchecked desire to survive. What makes him a little more complicated than how we think of RNA viruses is that he at some level knows, presumably from his agent programming, that certain things represent an existential threat to himself, regardless of the number of replicants he creates: Neo and the free humans, who might instigate a rebooting of the matrix, which he, as a program confined to the matrix (until he isn’t) may not survive. Why he doesn’t opt to move into the fringes ala the Merovingian isn’t clear to me, but if you read his actions as a constant effort to simply continue to exist in his present form, the question of his will, and his motives, tracks pretty well for me. Given the past several years, I’m aware that thinking of him as a accidentally released weaponized virus is, uh, a bit fraught. But he kinda is?

Yes

This fucking rules, thanks for putting these together again

sorry David but Tank >>> Link. I get Perrineau is a better actor (and person) but Chong gets to have so much more personality in a briefer appearance, not to mention Link gets nowhere near as significant a moment as lighting up Cypher

I did a trailer reel for Reloaded that approximates what would've played before the film in theaters, including all the commercial tie-ins Reloaded had. https://www.dropbox.com/s/m82ijzv4cy9a0a6/May%2015%2C%202003%20trailer%20reel.mp4?dl=0 Guess I should also post the reel for Revolutions: https://www.dropbox.com/s/46lzehsvzyk7lwb/November%205%2C%202003%20trailer%20reel.mp4?dl=0 Also someone scanned that Powerade commercial with the agent mentioned in the episode at 4K: https://youtu.be/WFY6_l6gVRs

1:00:44 sounds like an ad read for “the architect”

The wonderful serendipity of having listened to the pod for Solo: A Keeping Coaxium Cold Story immediately before listening to this episode paid off like gangbusters.

The twins die when Morpheus blows up the car, they die in the fire. Right?

Tommy Karlsson

There were a couple of moments where Griffin gave an exasperated or excited “David???” And I thought we were going into an ad read 😅 Unrelated: The action scenes in this made me think I would love your guys, and maybe especially Ben’s, take on Kung Fu Hustle.

Andrew Jansson

Take My Hand is Dido’s best song!

Bradley Davis

Love Griff’s nipplespotting segment.

Anthony Regina

Is Griff’s “Crazy in Love is Beyoncé’s best song and album” his worst take?

Ian Smart

My interpretation is that Smith resurrected by being overwritten with Neo's code when being destroyed from the inside. Neo was anomalous from all other anomalies and Smith is the balance of the equation. When Neo chose to liberate coppertops instead of reboot the matrix, Smith could only do the opposite. Imprison them in a hive mind. Even in Resurrections, with Thomas Anderson as an amnesiac creator, what could Smith be but an amnesiac capitalist? Their polar opposites, drawn to and repelling each other. That's why Smith has to keep fighting. It's in his programming to control/ balance the One. Whether he's free from the system or not. Sorry if this was pedantic or unnecessary.

Travis Jones

Five minutes in and we’re doing the top five music acts. Looooove it.

Release the image of Tooth Head!!

Benjamin Haworth

i love this theory

Jordan B. Anderson

My take on Smith becoming a virus is that he's become more "human", and as a result he becomes exactly how he described humans in the first film because that's his conception of free will and humanity.

every commentary should open with a round of That Week in Music

Couldn't have a better way to end the week
