Crocodile Dundee

That's not a podcast...this is a PODCAST!

Yes, Checkmates welcome to 2021. BC:SF is starting the new year off right with a new franchise commentary series on the Crocodile Dundee movies. Seriously how did Paul Hogan become an international star and how did this character make such an impact?

In their first installment of the CD marathon, Griffin, David, and Ben watch the 1986 film that started it all: Crocodile Dundee!

The movie starts at...7:57

Comments

I listened to all three of these. I haven’t watched them in years, never saw part 3. In the LA commentary David mentions Croc’s time telling skills. The other best joke from the first movie is when he quickly looks at Walter’s watch when Sue is looking away, then he glances up at the sun and says, “2:20, we betteh git stahted”

Dave Ferry

When I was a kid I thought this was a docu-drama…

JC

Your buildup and payoff to the knife joke definitely topped the movie's buildup and payoff for you guys. Also, +1 for the Baxter references!

Jasper Francisco

What the heck was that?! Wow that was shocking. 4/10

Ancient alien

This is my first time watching this movie! 😂 everything you guys said in the beginning is exactly my feelings also. I’ve been avoiding this movie for years but fuck it. Let’s go. *takes bong hit

Ancient alien

For me, this was like showing one of my favorite childhood movies to two friends who’d never seen and then having them talk over it the whole time, miss plot points, and assume the plot points never existed. Think I prefer their takes when they listen to the movie as well.

Will Rogers

I need to go to Croc World now.

Billnetherlands

“Don’t Leave Me Now” from Lyle, Lyle Crocodile still remains one of the most heart-wrenching songs ever written. It destroyed me as a child.

Hayley

Clarification on the Reginald VelJohnson improptu boomerang move. That's a TV antenna(not a hood ornament) he yanks off the limo, TV antennas for cars were like that back then.. we had an Econoline van with a little TV in it(my dad actually hooked up a VCR and Nintendo for road trips), had the same boomerang shaped antenna on the roof. Now that you've seen it you'll recognize it in 80's movies with limos and shit

Jon Smith

This was great! More blind commentaries of questionable (and short!) franchises please! And happy New Years to the #twofriends, our finest film critic, and of course all of my fellow blankies. May 2021 be better than 2020!

Probles

A very generous take.

Andy Hazel

I happened to rewatch this a couple weeks ago and had the same revulsion to watching CD grope two different people for a laugh. But I feel like the movie is still watchable. CD is otherwise reasonably enlightened. But I wonder: how much of this type of poorly aging comedy can a movie have before it becomes unwatchable to our modern sensibilities? Animal House? Coming to America? Stripes? American Pie?

Daniel Smith

I'll say this about Foster's, it's the only beer I could get in the UK for 2 pounds.

Douglas Wykstra

It kept reminding me of Coming to America.

Doctor wu

I just can't wait to hear them process the first five minutes of Croc 2. It's so dang banoodles.

Richard Pierce McLain

I love how much my country is mentioned in this episode. David’s Aussie accent is actually pretty good. Also Australians do not generally tip in our country as our minimum wage is higher than the states.

Oscar

I'm glad you guys called out some of the things I liked most about the film – specifically the time it takes and the mood it sets during the Australia section, as well as the musical score and the final scene in the subway. I have to confess I had totally forgotten the really gross transphobia, though. Man the 80s really didn't have its shit together.

Ben Stephens

This is a great episode you guys sound really happy!

Alex Ba

I’m all in on the month long subplot of how the bloomin’ onions turn out

Stephen Ayres

Weirdly enough, impossible to stream or rent anywhere in Poland.

Filip Boratyn

I loved The Boy Who Could Fly when I was a kid. I’m going to have to watch that again.

Rufina Moody

Talkin' the Croc 2021

Andrew

My brothers loved this movie. We watched it so many times when I was a kid. Literally the only reason I knew Australia existed for the first 15 years of my life.

SJ

Foster's is very much an export beer - the brewery's new owners ate looking at pushing it locally again as a budget option. I have never drank it and I do NOT have high standards.

Hayden Nicholls

Also Bloomin' Onions are amazing, Sims has made a good chain choice as others have noted.

Lauren Damon

You brought it up briefly about Steve Irwin coming to prominence much later after Hogan and I mean, the third Dundee movie came out in 2001 with the Crocodile Hunter MOVIE coming out in 2002 (of course after a few years of tv popularity) so it's likely Irwin revived the CD "franchise" interest from the studios' perspective --I had to look up both of their release dates because in my head I feel like I saw them back to back in time

Lauren Damon

Dripping acid and listening to this in a hot tub is how I’m starting 2021 apparently. I think the Ben-ducer would approve

Dustin

I would love to hear what Ben thinks of Wake In Fright. If he ever came up in March Madness, I would be voting for Ted Kotcheff.

Anthony Simon

This was one of my favorite commentary episodes. I love the idea of covering "not-so-great" movies.

Dan Stadnik

"outback steakhouse, which is my favorite chain restaurant" david sims, a man of TASTE!!!!!!

Rachael

Love Crocodile Dundee, it is one of the great Australian movies! In country Victoria it doesn’t make us cringe!

Zoy Frangos

The didgeridoo start sound over the Paramount logo is so perfect it is a shame the movie doesn't just start that way on its own.

Adam

The actor with the great face John Meillon, is one of our finest actors ever, an amazing body of work, you may have heard of Wake in Fright, a truly terrifying look at the isolation of the outback.

Michelle Lehner

I was a teenager and me and my friends loved it, I also grew up watching The Paul Hogan Show it was huge with my parents, although on school camp I did choose to see The Karate Kid instead of this, really showing my age here 😆

Michelle Lehner

I was a kid in Australia when these were made. We didn't understand why it was so big either.

Former Janitor

Dundee bless us, everyone!

Jordan B. Anderson

Hoges is hard enough as a phenomenon to understand if you were born here; god help everyone else.

Hayden Nicholls

Paul Hogan is the Benny Watts of his time, confident enough in his look that it works.

Nate Shu

Happy new year blankies. We did it

John Mannella

West Coast 2020ers

kirsed

Hold on, before I start the movie I have to pour hot water all over my cocaine

David Rosenthal

y'all really making Crocodile Dundee the first thing I watch in 2021, huh?
