I read the book many times from beginning to end. Jiang Tian was not homophobic, by the way. When I saw the comment, I couldn't help writing it. He's never homophobic. The director said it was a simple line from the book. Tian never had any behavior to support this in the book. So there was no need for it in the show. The teachers were already lovers in the book. There were no such scenes. Tian knew in advance that they were lovers. Because of them, he realizes that it's not a bad thing for two men to love each other. His father is bad because he is unfaithful, he is a liar and he has sex with his lover in the house he moved to supposedly to take care of his child, not caring about the possibility of his child seeing him. He has never been the right parental figure for a child. He is a selfish person.

In the original book, Tian was originally homophobic because he saw his father having sex with a man when he was a child. After meeting Xi and Lin, he couldn't accept that they were a couple at first until Tian grew up and figured it out. In the original work, Wang didn't realize that he liked Tian more than just friends until he saw Xi and Lin kissing. Later, in order to avoid Tian, he deliberately failed in the test and went to Class B English competition training. Wang took the initiative to cross the boundary and kissed Tian, and then they got together later. There was only this kiss before we were together So the director was afraid that the audience would wait too long before showing a risky kiss in the second episode

I think the 2nd couple are a mirror of WangTian. Which could be showing how long we'll have to wait to see our main get together.
Also, don't think they'd film the scene with the kid. I hope not at least
Oh, the dad was cheating though. Clearly on their matrimonial home. Coz we see family pictures on the bedside

This series was my last beacon of hope in a sea of mediocre BL series that have recently been released. I have a sinking feeling about episode 12 (that I will keep to myself until I actually watch it and see if I’m correct about what will happen). I agree with you, the side couple really throws the story off. For me it was ever since the sports day episode. The whole kidnapping and love triangle thing was so unnecessary IMHO. The two lead actors are so talented that it seems like a waste to not have the focus be solely on them. I know this is based on a novel but I don’t understand why the producers couldn’t cut all the other nonsense out.

In the novel, it's pretty much like in the drama, the first chapters, they "hate" each other (equivalent to episodes 1 to 3) then they get closer and we see them develop their friendship (episodes 3 to 9) then Sheng Wang begins to realize that his feelings for Jiang Tian go beyond brotherly love (episode 10-11).
Jiang Tian is traumatized because of the scene with his father, in the novel, he became completely homophobic, in the drama, they had to soften Jiang Tian's perspective on that a little otherwise he would never have kissed Sheng Wang in episode 2...
The kissing scene between the second couple was probably there to make Sheng Wang completely realize that he also wants to kiss Jiang Tian but this time not for fun or a bet.
I had seen on X that Jenny's character was just there for the drama's sponsors.
