I don't know if you missed that but when Al and Ed were in the basement ready to do the human transmutation they cut their finger -their blood holds memories and information of their mother, everyone and everything is believed to be connected by the "soul", also there is the fact that they are blood related (I can't remember the details how this was explained in the manga). Alchemy is the science of understand, decomposing and reconstructing matter. Things can't be created from nothing, to gain something you must sacrifice something of equal value, the law of equivalent exchange. This is something that generally separates alchemy from performing magic. The basic rules were really well explained in the intro of this episode👌🏻 Alchemy has a long history (varies a bit in "European" and "Asian" alchemy) and was practised as an early form of science. In this show it's a mixture of science, natural philosophy and chemistry, also with mythology and religious elements. Hiromu Arakawa (mangaka and the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist) really knows her stuff about this! "What is the value of a soul or of a human life in general" is one theme that this show likes to play around with, what are the ethical and moral issues about trying to bring back someone who is already dead, what is considered as a taboo or sin and why. What Ed gave in exchange for getting his brother back is something you need to figure out as the story continues, as well as the whole stuff Ed saw, The Philosopher Stone, etc. I hope you enjoy the show and won't get spoiled!🙏🏻
