EP.13 1. (Pre-Livestock Female University Student Lee Sol-ah) - Marriage Registration (13)

I cried silently, and the saleswomen couldn't hide their snickering.

Coming here means that the pre-wedding meetings are all done. Some couples might have already completed their marriage registration.

I still have rights, but it's as if I don't. The customer here is Oppa, not me. The saleswomen's behavior was rude because they knew I couldn't say anything even if they mocked me in front of me.

"...I'll try it on."

I grabbed any dress from the rack and rushed into the fitting room. I wanted to escape the situation.

I knew the real faces behind their fake smiles.

In the fitting room, I held back my tears and tried on the dress. It was simple enough to put on by myself.

The dress exposed my chest and underwear, essentially a wedding dress version of a livestock outfit.

"Uh..."

Tears burst out. I was worried about my makeup, but I couldn't help it.

I was sad. Very sad.

I had prepared myself to become a livestock, losing my rights and walking on all fours.

But I didn't want to show that to people I knew. If I had known, I wouldn't have invited my friends.

I sat in the corner of the fitting room, burying my face in my knees.

"Uh...uh...uh..."

I cried, muffling my voice in my knees.

If I keep crying, Oppa will worry. I need to calm down and go out.

But I couldn't.

In my mind, the wedding march kept replaying. I saw myself walking on all fours with a leash.

I'll cry then too. I'll walk that path crying.

In front of Dad's acquaintances, Oppa's acquaintances, my friends...

It's humiliating.

Too humiliating.

I can no longer be friends with them, and I won't be able to call Oppa "oppa" anymore.

"Uh...uh...uh..."

Tears wouldn't stop. I had to stop them and go out in the dress.

"...Sol-ah."

Oppa called me. I needed to respond quickly so he wouldn't worry.

"Uh...uh...uh..."

My mouth wouldn't move. Tears kept falling from my eyes.

"Sol-ah, are you there?"

Stop. Please stop, tears. I need to face Oppa calmly.

But my body wouldn't cooperate.

The fitting room door opened.

"Sol-ah..."

I felt Oppa standing in front of me, but I couldn't lift my face.

My makeup was ruined from crying, and I didn't want Oppa to see me like this again.

"Uh...oppa...sorry...I'm so sorry...I was so foolish...and everything is ruined..."

Oppa didn't respond. Maybe he thought I looked foolish. Maybe he was disappointed.

"I couldn't try on the dress...oppa...you were waiting...sorry...really sorry..."

"This store is terrible. Let's leave."

Suddenly, I was lifted up.

"Aaah!"

Oppa picked me up and covered my head with a coat.

"This dress is terrible! We'll never come back to this store again!"

Oppa's loud voice echoed through the store.

"Why are you asking me to wear it? Why are you bothering me?"

The saleswomen were flustered, but I couldn't hear them clearly.

"Move aside!"

"But you need to take off the dress you're wearing..."

"You just called me a livestock! Did you really just call Sol-ah that?"

"Ah...sorry...!"

Oppa's body tensed with anger at the saleswomen's disrespect.

"Because Sol-ah is here, I'll let it go."

Oppa pulled out a wad of cash and threw it.

The bills fluttered down from the air.

"Don't do business like this! You bastards!"

The saleswomen scrambled to pick up the money as Oppa carried me out of the store.

"I'm sorry. We should have gone to a nicer place."

"It's not their fault, oppa...they didn't do anything wrong."

"What do you mean nothing's wrong? They treated you like a livestock!"

"I'll soon be a livestock anyway."

Oppa was speechless. My words were realistic.

The fact that we were there for the wedding dress meant that everything, including the pre-wedding meetings and wedding venue, was set. This meant I would become a livestock.

"It's just that they called me a livestock, which is true. The saleswomen cared more about oppa, who was paying."

"Why are you crying? Is it because of them?"

"I'm crying because of the wedding."

"The wedding?"

Oppa's voice tensed slightly, perhaps worried that I might not want to get married.

"I heard there's a wedding march. I didn't know about it."

"Yes, there is."

"When the necklace is put on me, I'll lose my rights. In public, I won't be able to stand on two legs."

My voice trembled again. I didn't want to tremble, but I wanted to speak calmly.

"I didn't want to walk on all fours in front of my friends...if I had known, I wouldn't have invited them..."

"...Sol-ah..."

"I cried because of that. The saleswomen didn't do anything wrong."

"But I won't forgive them. They called you a livestock again despite my warning."

"There's nothing wrong with calling a livestock a livestock."

"The dress was also unbecoming. It lacked dignity."

Oppa's grip on my leg tightened.

"I'll find a better dress for you, something elegant. And don't worry about the wedding march. I won't make you walk on all fours in front of your friends."

"But oppa, that's illegal..."

"I can carry you. It's not illegal to carry a livestock."

"Ah..."

Tears flowed again at Oppa's warm consideration.

"Thank you, oppa...really thank you..."

"What's there to thank? I'm grateful you chose me despite my shortcomings."

I buried my face in Oppa's back and cried again. His expensive suit got wet, but he didn't scold me. He just held me more comfortably.

For the marriage, it wasn't just the marriage registration form that was needed. I also needed to sign a document confirming the surrender of my rights, a livestock ownership transfer registration, and a family relationship exclusion application.

Receiving these documents made it real.

I would become a livestock, lose my rights, and become someone's property.

This was an unavoidable fate, and my new owner would be responsible for it.

I love him, and he will take care of me.

But all my independent thoughts will disappear. I won't be able to do anything I want.

I cried a lot after receiving the documents, before taking them to Mom and Dad.

I didn't want to cry in front of them, so I thought that if I cried now, I wouldn't have to later.

Dad sighed when he saw the documents needed for the marriage registration.

In those documents, I was treated as a mere object, a livestock that could be bought and sold, even graded.

"...Do you want me to fill out these documents?"

"Yes..."

It was just Dad and me; Mom wasn't there. Maybe Dad arranged it that way out of consideration for us.

"Okay, I'll fill them out."

No one said anything, but we were all prepared.

Dad's trembling hand held the pen.

The sound of the pen scratching the paper was the only thing echoing between us.

Dad finished filling out the documents and put them in an envelope.

"Here you go."

Dad hugged me.

"I'm sorry, Dad...I'm sorry...I couldn't protect you...sorry..."

I wanted to say it was okay, to act as if nothing was wrong.

But I couldn't.

Dad's embrace was something I would soon miss. I buried my face in his chest and cried silently, not wanting to forget this moment.
