[SUBTITLES] Green Divers Prelim

I'm going to work on timing this tomorrow, but here's the first draft of the subtitle script for the short:

GUNDAM NEO EXPERIENCE: GREEN DIVERS

Preliminary Script
Version 1.0

Narration: Universal Century. The era when humanity moved its burgeoning population into space. The total population of Earth had been halved by the war for independence waged by the space immigrants, the Spacenoids. This conflict would come to be known as the One Year War. Though victorious in this conflict, the Earth Federation faced the daunting task of rebuilding a ravaged planet, all the while harboring deep mistrust towards the Spacenoids. This fear gave rise to the Earth-supremacist faction and its security force, the Titans, tasked with tightening their grip on the Spacenoids. The increasingly radical Titans began to crack down on the Spacenoids, even manipulating the Earth Federation, their original higher organization, and expanding their brutal use of force. On the other hand, military personnel who defected from the Earth Federation formed anti-Earth Federation organizations, such as AEUG and Karaba, in order to stop the Titans' rampage. The AEUG and Karaba engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Titans, and intense mobile suit battles unfolded in space and on Earth. After more than six months of civil war, the people of Earth finally realized the Titans' atrocities thanks to the political broadcasts of the AEUG and Karaba, and they gradually began to break free from their grip. Thus, humanity found itself divided among three major factions: the Earth Federation, the Titans, and the allied forces of the AEUG and Karaba, all fiercely contesting with each other. At that time, the battle was entering a new phase. December U.C.0087...

Computer: The Prospero is currently orbiting at an altitude of 220 kilometers above Earth, maintaining a stable satellite orbit at a speed of approximately 8 kilometers per second. At this altitude, gravity and centrifugal force are in balance. Any slower, and we would fall to Earth; any faster, and we would drift away from it. Space is far from a hospitable environment for humans.

Takuya: What're you doing?

Computer: In this vacuum, devoid of the air necessary for human survival, a lit candle would be extinguished. A balloon with just a bit of air would expand uncontrollably due to the difference in air pressure...

Asagi: Next week, we have a test in zero-gravity training. That's why I'm practicing...
Takuya: You're always on it, Asagi.
Asagi: The future is something we have to make out for ourselves.

Computer: We will soon be arriving at the Dakar Spaceport...

Takuya: Hey, Asagi, do we really have to go?
Asagi:  It's not like we'll be able to experience zero-gravity on Earth for a while. You're the one who said it'd be boring.
Takuya: Well yeah, but still...

Asagi: Oh, a battle. It's ridiculous that the Federation, AEUG, and Titans are fighting over this beautiful planet.
Takuya: This is serious. Let's get to one of the shuttles.
Asagi: Don't worry, we're on a civilian route far from the combat zone. There's no way we'll get caught up in the battle.

Announcement:  Emergency situation detected.

Asagi: Takuya, to the shuttle!
Takuya: Right!

Announcement: Secure the airlock in Block A--

Prospero Captain: Someone injured their leg. We haven't confirmed the whereabouts of two passengers yet.
Crewman: The shuttle detachment system has been activated.
Prospero Captain: What will happen to the remaining two passengers? They have no choice but to die in the vacuum of space.

Takuya: But why? We're still here.

Jack: Is there anyone else left besides you two?
Asagi: No, I think it's just us. Was that a Titan's Hi-Zack that attacked us?
Jack: There's no time to talk about that now. Listen, your ship just lost speed from the attack and has entered a falling trajectory.
Takuya: What does that mean?
Asagi: Just be quiet.
Jack:  I wish I could help you, but I'm in no state to offer assistance.
Asagi: What should we do?
Jack: Hurry to the rotating residential block. Consider this an order from a superior officer.
Asagi: Okay.
Jack: Your ship will eventually crash to the Earth. I don't know how long the hull will hold up. Fortunately, the escape pods are equipped on the rotating residential block. Get into the pod and escape from there immediately. Abandon the Prospero.
Asagi: You can't be serious?!
Jack: Shut up and listen to me! Your ship is now oriented 90 degrees sideways relative to its orbital direction after the attack. The rotating residential block is generating 0.3G of gravity with a 67-meter arm rotating twice per minute. This means it's rotating at a speed of 14 meters per second. I'll have to detach the pod in the direction of your ship's travel.
Asagi: Wouldn't it be better to throw it upwards?
Jack: That wouldn't change the velocity or the time it takes to fall.
Asagi: We have to accelerate in the tangential direction to buy some time, right?
Jack: That's right.

Jack: Which color shaft did you enter?
Asagi: Green. But how will you detach it?
Jack: By shooting through the shaft with a beam rifle. Close the bulkheads.
Asagi: That's so reckless!
Jack: There's no other way. Hurry, I'll fire in 10 seconds.

Asagi: Look.
Takuya: The Prospero, it's--
Announcement: An air leak has been detected inside the ship. Cabin pressure is dropping.
Takuya: Asagi.
Asagi: Hurry to the airlock.
Announcement: Please put on a normal suit or proceed to the nearest lifeboat. An air leak has been detected inside the ship. Cabin pressure is dropping. Please put on a normal suit or proceed to the nearest lifeboat.

Asagi: Why won't the outer hatch open?
Computer: The outside of the hatch is in a vacuum. Please check the connection with the lifeboat and perform the opening and closing procedure again.
Asagi: Why is it a vacuum? The lifeboat... We have to go back and get a normal suit.
Computer: The hatch won't open because the residential block is depressurized. You'll need a Class 10 power-assist tool.
Asagi: Even if we forcibly detach, the shuttle will...
Takuya: What do we do? Are we going to die in this cramped space?

Asagi: We're getting onto the lifeboat just like this.
Takuya: But it's a vacuum out there.
Asagi: Well, yeah.
Takuya: If we go into a vacuum, our blood will boil, and our bodies will burst like balloons, won't they?
Asagi: Humans are more resilient than balloons, so it would take several minutes for that to happen.
Takuya: No way... That's absolutely impossible.
Asagi: Dad did it once before, you know.
Takuya: Oh, really?
Asagi: He said he was exposed to vacuum, just like this, for 20 seconds with his bare skin.
Takuya: Dad did...
Asagi: So, we can do it too.

Asagi: Let me go over hyperventilation. Before going outside, we'll take several deep breaths to increase the oxygen concentration in our blood.
Takuya: Okay.
Asagi: But this is only for emergencies. It's a risky method because you might lose consciousness if the oxygen concentration gets too high.
Takuya: Got it.
Asagi: Good. After hyperventilating, when I give the signal, exhale all the air in your lungs at once. If you don't, the pressure difference could rupture your lungs.  And keep your eyes closed—don't open them. Got it?
Takuya: Y-yeah.
Asagi: Let's start taking deep breaths.
Takuya inhales deeply.
Asagi: Deeper.
Takuya inhales deeply multiple times.
Asagi: Here we go!
Computer: The hatch lock has been automatically released.

Takuya: We did it, Asagi!
Asagi: Takuya, can you let go of my hand?
Takuya: Oh, sorry.
Asagi: Gently, okay?
Takuya: Huh?
Asagi: Guess I hit the hatch. My arm feels weird.
Takuya: Then who's going to pilot?
Asagi: Don't worry. These lifeboats are designed with automatic pilot systems, assuming untrained people might board them. Now, let's head back to Earth.

Asagi: Seems like a heavy concentration of Minovsky particles. We're being jammed.
Computer: Welcome to Anaheim Corporation's emergency lifeboat, Aerial D-300. You're safe now. The Aerial will automatically reenter Earth's atmosphere while transmitting a distress signal. The Aerial utilizes a lifting body design. Though it lacks wings, it generates lift using the entire-- Our Earth's atmosphere, known as the exosphere, is about 120 km thick. However, compared to Earth's radius of 6,370 km, that is-- If the entry angle into the atmosphere is too shallow, we'll bounce off; if it's too steep, we'll burn up. But don't worry. The Aerial D-300 is--
Takuya: So that's what happens, huh?
Computer: Fasten your seatbelt--
Asagi: Enough already!
Computer: In 5 seconds, the Aerial will initiate the Earth return sequence.
Asagi: What's wrong?
Computer: The external arm is still attached, so we can't execute the return sequence. Follow the instructions of the nearest staff member...
|
Asagi: The nearest staff member is 180 km below us. Forget this! Takuya, we'll do it manually.
Computer: Manual control mode has been selected. To return to autopilot mode--
Takuya: Asagi, it's fine. Don't worry about piloting it.
Asagi: You'll do it, Takuya.
Takuya: No way! I can't. I didn't go to Space Academy like you.
Asagi: You can handle the output stuff with your left hand, Takuya. All you have to do is control the attitude.
Takuya: I'm only 10 years old!
Asagi: Don't worry, I always score full marks on the simulator.
Takuya: I can't do it.
Asagi: If you don't, we'll burn up like Prospero. We've gotta do this.
Takuya: Haah, okay.
Asagi: Let's go.

Asagi: First, we'll reduce our speed using retrothrusters. Then, we'll change our attitude for reentry.

Asagi: Once the angle of attack is set, maintain that position. Don't move the control stick at all.

Asagi: No!

Asagi: I told you not to move the control stick. Didn't you listen?
Takuya: But...
Asagi: If we dive with the nose too high, we'll burn up. If you panic, it's over! We used up our propellant with the last burn,  and there may only be one more left. We don't have much air left... A perfect score on the simulator means nothing.
Takuya: I can do it one more time.
Asagi: It's cutting it close. But it might not work.
Takuya: Is there a chance?
Asagi: There is a chance...
Takuya: Let's do it then. You said we make our own future. What's the next step?
Asagi: Let's check our current orbit. We'll slow down  and switch to a trajectory that will return us to Earth. Use the retro-thrusters.

Takuya: Asagi.
Asagi: It's okay. Pull the nose up a bit.

Takuya: We did it, Asagi!
Asagi: We sure did!
Takuya: Look, there are clouds and land!
Asagi: Of course, it's Earth after all.
Takuya: When we get back, I'll brag to Natalie and Yoshiyuki. Tell them about our incredible adventure.
Asagi: You'll become the hero of the class. It's time to open the parachute. Brace for impact, it might be rough.

Takuya: I can't control it. What happened?
Asagi: I don't know. Mayday! Mayday! If anyone can hear us, please respond.
Takuya: Help us!

Amuro: Are you planning to just burn up like that? Stand up and look ahead. Focus on the control stick and instruments.
Takuya: Look!

Takuya: That's a Titans' mobile suit!

Amuro: Stabilize the craft immediately. Raise the nose.

Asagi: But, the Aerial's mass and speed are too great.
Takuya: Asagi.

Takuya: What?
Asagi: Who?

Asagi: Those are AEUG, Titans, and Earth Federation's GMs.
Takuya: Why is everyone fighting? Why did they save us?
Amuro: Because we want to believe that we're fighting for the future.
Takuya: For the future...

Amuro: Let's meet again in the sky someday.

Amuro: I wish all encounters could be like this. Not on the battlefield.

Oh, that. Yeah, it does get a little old, but at least it allows for translation continuity. It's only when they switch up some of the wording where I go "hey, wait a minute! That's not what the original said!"

What do you mean?

Do you ever get bored translating the intro to UC?
