2023-12-15 23:04:32 +0000 UTCJust for the FYI, this true story was first made into a smash hit movie in 1987 in its native Japan called Hachikō Monogatari. As touching as the movie is, I find it too soul-crushingly sad to be a favorite. The loyalty of critters to their humans is touching and awesome, but... If Hachi were a human, I'd want him to get some therapy, come to terms with his loss, move on and learn to love again. The fact he's not human doesn't really change any of that. Except maybe the therapy. Pet psychologists are quacks. But it's like a story about someone who loses a true love in their 20's, and die alone 60 years later because they never found another to measure up to that old flame. So very romantic. So very depressing and sad. As someone who's adopted pets of the deceased before, I know it's possible, and could make for just as touching and more uplifting of a tale. But that's just me. Like the last time we crossed paths with Richard Gere on the channel, I would highly recommend a work from his early career, An Officer and a Gentleman. It's a really good film that has, thus far, been overlooked among film reaction channels.
