Step 2: I used the initial blocking from step 1 to better define the key poses. Once some basic forms were defined I began adding the in-between frames, bring us up to a total of 64 drawings to complete the turn. That is more frames than originally planned but I found the turning speed needed to be reduced.
Everything at this stage is still very rough and loose, especially the finer details. In the next step I'll be cleaning up the line work to further sculpt the details and smooth out the motion. By gradually tightening down the details (both in forms and in the motion) I can make sure I have things right before committing to them in final inks.
True to the purpose of this exercise, even at this middle stage of the animation I feel a much stronger understanding of Ayla's proportions and design.
