Latest OGL Update
Added 2023-01-18 18:07:40 +0000 UTCWotC has finally released what could be called an actual apology in regard to the ongoing OGL debacle.
You can read it here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1428-a-working-conversation-about-the-open-game-license
There is still A LOT uncertain, but it looks like they are beginning to listen to the community and move things in the right direction.
When the new OGL is released on 1/20 WotC will be asking for feedback if you could give feedback via their form that would be amazing!
At Critical Crafting, these are our major concerns (concerns that we can't say have been resolved until the new ogl is released for review):
1. Ownership of Content. The new OGL needs clear language identifying creative content as the creator's own, and NOT giving WotC permission to use that content by signing their new contract (something that was rather sneaky about some of the leaked (not) drafts).
2. Formatting. This is an incredibly important topic and one few people are taking about. The original leaked update to the OGL required all references to the OGL/SRD content within it (spells, races, etc.) to be formatted differently to direct readers to the OGL. This creates an almost impossible burden on the small creator from a formatting perspective, and on the larger creator with massive projects citing the OGL as well. If you can take the time to fill out the form when it is released and ask WotC to leave citation alone, using a simple reference to the OGL at the start and end of a document as is currently allowed by the 1.0 we would be eternally grateful.
3. Royalties. The update states that there will be no royalty structure, lets make sure that is the case.
4. Overall, we understand WotC needs to update some portions of language from the 1.0 to help protect their increased interests, but this should be able to be done to protect against NFT's and intellectual property theft without putting a burden on small creators and the community as a whole.
For those of you that helped make this happen by making your voices heard, THANK YOU. The fight is not over by any means, but it seems like things are finally moving in the right direction for the future of the game we all love so dearly.
