The void of the Hollow Expanse is illuminated by the endless portals that are scattered throughout - connection the numerous planes directly to the Expanse. These portals act as the sole way of traveling in and out of the Expanse, and as such are often times patrolled by Fringe Lurkers.
Fringe Lurkers float and patiently wait for a weary merchant or wayward explorer to get too close before attacking. Some Lurkers have even been observed ingesting small portals, inevitably sending their prey to some far-off world after devouring them.
