Mission: Impossible (1996) Full Length REACTION!

Comments

You might find my reaction to Mission: Impossible 2 surprising!πŸ™ˆ But I agree, that rendition of Ethan was less endearing/sympathetic, so I’m looking forward to seeing how he evolves as a character over the course of the series.

You may have already watched MI2 by now. If not, then brace yourself. And if you have, then at least know that MI2 is definitely not representative of what the series has to offer. (Though since you've already seen MI6 in the theaters, you already have a good idea of what the series evolves into.) For many, MI2 is the black sheep of the franchise. It almost feels like a parody of a 90s action movies. I also personally feel that it has the shakiest performance of Tom Cruise's career. (And I'm someone who considers him to be a really good, often underrated actor.) In addition to the typical excesses of John Woo movies, it's absent many of the elements that later became hallmarks of the series: (a) The group dynamic and joy found in the way team members interact with one another. (b) Ethan Hunt as an "in over his head" underdog. Rather, in MI2, Ethan Hunt is a lone wolf, and he seems to approach life-threatening situations with a smirk and gusto. While that may seem cool in the moment, it doesn't really build that same sympathetic response in the audience. Cruise must've realized this too, because starting in MI3/MI4 (with JJ Abrams on as a long-time producer), they basically do a 180 in how they approach the Ethan Hunt character and the tone of the movies. I'm curious to see what you think of the evolution of the series.

Vanessa Redgrave was GREAT.
