18+ to play 17 years old, Black, Male, from Tallahassee, Florida in the late 1960s. A daydreamer. Well-mannered and observational. Elwood sees the beauty in everyday ordinary things. He is slow to move – precise but not meticulous. Appears to have come from a good home, but in truth, his mother and father have abandoned him. He still believes they will return one day. In the meantime, he has his Grandmother Hattie whose love truly stabilizes and strengthens him. Smart in a scholarly and bookish way. Due to an unlucky encounter, Elwood is placed at The Nickel Academy - a state-sponsored reform school for Black boys (based on the real story of the Dozier School). There he meets Turner, and a host of other boys looking to navigate the system and work their way out. This is a huge contrast to all that he has previously known, growing up under the guidance and protection of his Grandmother. MUST BE 18+ or LEGALLY EMANCIPATED, AND ELIGIBLE TO WORK IN NTHE U.S. WITHOUT REQUIRING A VISA SPONSORSHIP.
