[ CHANG ]
Actor to play 16, Chinese-American, 5'8" tall, a member of the high school marching band and a wannabe basketball player, Chang is a sometimes awkward, insecure kid convinced he's never good enough to be popular, taken seriously, or get the girl. At odds with his well-meaning but traditional-minded mother, Chang often allows his self-deprecating tendencies to cloud good judgment. Determined to prove his worth and win the approval of pretty newcomer, Kristy, Chang makes a bet with longtime rival and school basketball star, Matt, that he can dunk a basketball. His determination is inspiring but ultimately proves misguided. However, the effort to tackle the seemingly impossible forces young Chang to make some very important changes in his life...LEAD (2) Speaks elementary Mandarin. Actor to play 16, Asian-American, also a member of the school marching band, he is Chang's longtime, loyal best friend. Grounded and sensible, he is supportive of Chang, while also disapproving of his friend's desperate efforts to be popular. A gamer and a whiz when it comes to video editing, he later makes a deal with a former pro player who has agreed to help Chang achieve his dream of dunking a basketball...LEAD (2)

[ KRISTY ]
Actor to play 17, any ethnicity, first seen in a "black Metallica tee tucked into acid-washed black jeans," she is the new girl in school. A very talented drummer and fan of 90’s rock, she joins the school marching band, quickly befriended by a smitten Chang. She's also being wooed by popular jock, Matt. Impressively mature and intelligent with a good sense of humor, Kristy is a thoughtful, observant girl who manages to keep things in perspective. She is not impressed by Matt's cocky self-importance, also not amused by Chang's efforts to prove his self-worth at the expense of his friends...LEAD (8) Drumming / percussion experience a plus. Storyline: 16 year old CHANG, a constantly marginalized, not-popular high school kid, and wannabe basketball player, becomes obsessed with the idea of learning to dunk, all in an effort to best the school's basketball star, MATT, and, hopefully, win the adoration of the very pretty KRISTY...
