I've started trying to make a point to plan out better my sketches, as I find that they allow me to spend less time dinkin'round trying to think on the fly of what works! Taking the few minutes I can provide a day to pre-plan out the illustration I hope will allow me to not only make sure I can execute good composition, but also in picking a theme and setting that I feel would best compliment the character!
