SAAB Viggen and the CK37 computer

I forgot to upload the video to Patreon first!!

Apologies. Anyone who wants can still watch it a few hours before it premieres. As is often the case with me, I'll spend the next few days catching up with messages etc.

Oh and thanks to the folks here who helped out with this one.

Got it, thanks. Iโ€™ll add a correction on youtube (congratulations on being the first viewer to ever spot a mistake before I release on youtube!)

But it is a school aircraft and not lansen

Sacgr

Wops

At 9:05? i thought the Sk61 was a propeller driven light aircraft?

Alexander the ok

You teknecly showed the wrong aircraft in the photograpf in the museum. It is not a lansen but the school jet Sk 61. Small detail

With the Su-27 they fixed it with dampening and tuning response rates I think. I will have to go and re-read that section. Buran experienced the same issues reportedly. The engines on the powered version of the Buran were the same model (sans afterburner though as I recall) as the Su-27, AL-31F. Still kind of crazy that Sweden had a system in place a full decade before the Soviet Union regardless given the relative size of the countries, but Sweden's capabilities with ICs seem pretty impressive in general. I think on Buran and Su-27 the Soviets did all their development on IBM 360/370 based hardware. ES 1084s I think of that sounds correct?

What is even an AI powered whiteboard? Now I want to know.

I may be wrong here but I think the SU-27 stability issues were essentially encountered by the Swedes more than a decade before with the Draken. I'm not entirely sure how they dealt with that though.

Alexander the ok

haha that's a fair point - it is actually good for that. One the other side of things, I rage deleted my Miro account last week because their homepage now refers to it as an 'AI powered whiteboard'

Hey, I use generative AI all the time for correcting sentence structure (because I am a bad writer) and for generating some images (because I am a bad artist). Don't attack the things that make me seem barely competent dang it.

As an interesting point of comparison, the Su-27, which I think was the Soviet Union's first fighter with integrated FCS (ัะดัƒ RCS/SDU 10) only started development in 1971, and they had a lot of teething issues with longitudinal stability. (They also reworked it because they were not happy with the first version T-10-1.) So it didn't enter into full serial production until 1984 (I think it saw limited production in 1981/1982) or round about there. (The MiG 29 did have a 2 channel flight controller, the DUI but that was I think specifically used for the SAU-451 autopilot, and so it was not fully fly-by-wire.) To bring it full circle, because everything begins and ends with A-Ok, the SDU 10 was foundational to Buran's autonomous flight systems. As in the same team went on from working on one to the other. Hence the timelines for completion of Su-27 (1981/1982) and start of Buran's autonomous systems development at OKB Mars (1983) line up so closely.

Ha nice! If I wasn't so disorganised it'd have been up here yesterday.
