That scene with L and Light after the rooftop rain scene reminded me of Jesus' feet being washed by the sinful woman (L even says he's touching Light's feet to "atone for his sins"). Another one is Jesus washing the feet of his disciples to demonstrate humility and "cleansing of sins". A lot of feet washing was happening in the Gospels, but it was all about forgiveness and atoning for sins, etc. Basically, it's a Jesus/washing sins-related metaphor.
