It took me only over a decade, but I finally see the importance of the opening scene with Dudley and his friends bullying Harry. I used to think it was just another scene reinforcing how bad the Dursleys are. But it was setting up the reveal that Harry’s own father bullied Snape in a similar fashion. Right down to Harry’s comment about Dudley and his friends ganging up on a lone child, similar to how James and his friends ganged up on Snape. It makes Harry’s realization that much more impactful - he suffers from bullying just like Snape did. In a way it brings them closer together and gives Harry a small chance to understand Snape. I probably would have gone another decade without realizing this if it wasn’t for KSO’s very visceral reaction to the bullying. Thank you, KSO, for your compassion and insight.
