Just to explain a bit with what Burt and Heather Gummer (Michael Gross and Reba McEntire) were doing in their basement that attracted the Graboids: They have reloading equipment in their basement. The shaker that was making all that noise is a Case Tumbler that particulate is put in along with the brass casings of the spent bullets. It will shake and clean/polish the inside and outside of each casing so that it can be reused again. Technically it isn't necessary but is a good practice as it helps prevent corrosion and gets you longer life out of spent casings.
