You also see a bit of voguing in the Jody Watley "Friends" video, also from 1989.

There's a lot to learn here, for someone who's not familiar with Ball culture. The voice you hear is of Junior Labeija who was an emcee at the Balls, not André Leon Talley, and it's taken from the documentary Paris is Burning (1990), which I HIGHLY recommend watching. It would open you up to a whole world you didn't know existed. It's one of the most important, not just documentaries, but movies in LGBTQ+ history, and I'd say it's extremely influential on pop culture, as a whole, today. It's where terms like "(throwing) shade" and "reading" got known from. Malcolm got a hold of a copy the year before the movie's release, and was given permission from the director to use some of its audio. Madonna came out with "Vogue" and brought it into the mainstream, the year after, and same year as the PIB documentary. A house is an alternative family for (mostly) LGBTQ+ African American and Latin American individuals, and a place for those who have often been kicked out of their original homes due to being LGBTQ+, meant to provide shelter, solace and safety (I copied that part from Wikipedia, 'cause I'm not so great at explaining stuff myself). The houses are often named after big fashion houses, or have some other fabulous names, and they compete against other houses in the Balls for trophies, prizes etc. At the balls, they walk different categories (and which there are too many to list here), and voguing. Voguing was a dance inspired by model poses, and the name obviously came from Vogue Magazine.
