Yep. They were classmates at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn NY.

2021-01-21 03:59:51 +0000 UTCQuite an involved story behind this duet. The song was originally recorded by Neil Diamond in 1977. Barbra heard it and recorded a cover of it in 1978. Neither version became a hit. But then radio DJ's in several cities got the idea of putting the two versions together, with Neil and Barbra trading lines as they do here. It created such a stir, with people wanting to buy the duet as a record that the record company finally had to talk Neil and Barbra into coming back into the studio to do an "official" duet, which became a huge hit. This performance, done at the 1980 Grammys, was the first time they ever sang it in front of an audience.
