Patroncast S04E49 - New channel, & ideas to regain free time and transform TLE
Added 2024-12-09 09:23:26 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
I hope you're doing well :)
In this episode, I talk about:
01:00 The new Warhammer channel, how nice it is to have a "small channel" experience again, especially in the comment section
09:39 How to regain some amount of free time, and potential changes I could make to my activities, and the Linux channel
Let me know what you think, and have a great day!

Noted! Most people seem to agree, so probably, the "just Linux news" idea is not going to happen!

2024-12-11 09:43:49 +0000 UTCHaha no worries, I totally get that, I do ramble quite a lot, and daily news isn't necessarily for everyone ! It looks like the plan to do Linux news more often on the main channel isn't resonating at all with all supporters, so that's definitely not the direction I'll be going towards!

2024-12-11 09:43:39 +0000 UTCSpeaking honestly, I find you have too many offerings to follow. Most of the daily news and patreon channel "stream of consciousness" podcasts end up in my bit bucket. (No offense, but you do tend to ramble). The main TLE videos are still the most useful to me (and I think to the community), and the weekly news videos are more than enough to keep me up to date on the FLOSS world. If you need more ideas for TLE, I'm sure your patreon community here could offer a ton of suggestions. 😉 Still a better world for your work! ❤️☺️

2024-12-10 17:10:48 +0000 UTCI had a thought, somewhat echoing @Clint Eschberger's suggestion about a multi-part series. Maybe do an ongoing experiment with a new side of the Linux ecosystem? Distro reviews whether top-level or used-for-X-time and hardware reviews are already ✅, but maybe something from the developer or maintainer's side? E.g. documenting the process of fixing a bug start to finish (one small enough to not involve debates, take months, or bring undesired publicity pressure) so viewers may be led through how to help a project, or packaging some software as a .deb, .rpm, Flatpak etc to show relative burdens (although I can picture some disgruntlement if people disagree with the portrayed difficulty of each)? Interviews come to mind as another variety option. I watch Brodie's 2 hour interviews, but maybe something in the 25-45 minute range with devs, contributors, maintainers etc about items from the news or just whatever's interesting could be done more. I remember you talking with Niko from KDE and the CEO of Proton Mail and enjoyed those. That's enough backseat Youtubing :P. Take care 👋

2024-12-10 01:42:09 +0000 UTCI subscribed to your Patreon specifically to dodge needing to use Y*uTube for Linux news 🙃 I'm not going back to Y*uTube, so if you drop the daily news from the Patreon there's precious little keeping me here.

2024-12-09 22:53:43 +0000 UTCi think it'd be a shame if you dropped the non-news videos. currently my watching habit of your content is listening to the podcast almost every day, but catching up on the videos a few weeks to a month afterwards (since on average there's about 3 non-news videos a month). i'll still be a patreon after the switch for the patreoncast and the news podcast, but i'll likely stop watching your channel at all in video form. i think it might be a better idea to do video deep dives on topics that were mentioned in the news video, such that you do give extra content but it's easier to make, or alternatively to branch out to FOSS and free culture in general. but i'd rather you won't drop the non-news videos, though i'll be fully honest, i'll probably remain a patreon regardless.

2024-12-09 17:11:48 +0000 UTCYeah, the change would definitely not go smoothly, and chances are I’d just drop other projects before I turned the channel into a news channel
The Linux Experiment
2024-12-09 17:11:33 +0000 UTCYeah, I’m just throwing ideas out there, but in the end, I’d probably just drop other projects rather than « neuter » the channel

2024-12-09 17:10:56 +0000 UTCNo worries, I’m just pondering a few options :) I will most likely just keep going as I’ve been, with opinion pieces, and weekly news :) I’m throwing ideas out, but in the end, the goal is to be able to make a living from the channel, and so it means I’d likely drop other projects before I would turn the channel into « just news » !

2024-12-09 17:10:25 +0000 UTCI hope that if Nick decides to do daily news videos it won't end up becoming a news Patreoncast with a video. If he gives his opinion and goes more in depth on the news piece he talks about I could see myself being interested in that, but if it's just a shorter version of the weekly news then I'm not particularly interested.

2024-12-09 17:06:13 +0000 UTCI completely understand the business perspective and I will keep my fingers crossed if you decide to evolve the channel in the direction of a daily news show. However, I'm very clear this is not what has made me follow you on YT and Patreon. I read the same blogs and Linux news sites as you, so to me the soul of the channel are your opinion pieces. Not so much the reviews, as those are aplenty available whenever something major is released. I get that opinion pieces are tricky and YT algorithms like them much less than e.g. tier lists, but that's my honest personal preference and biggest interest. If you stop doing them, I will surely respect it, but at the same time will be likely to drop off.

2024-12-09 16:31:53 +0000 UTCFrom a monetization side, I think it would be a difficult sell. I love the news, but let's face it, it is an aggregation of news out there. I come to listen for that reason, as I like the flair you bring to it and your opinions. I also love the featured videos you do, however, and that is what actually is what brought me to your channel in the first place. One thing you could consider to help with the "ideas" piece is stop thinking of single video topics and instead look at things you could discuss over a series of videos. You could, one, find interesting topics that have more depth, which would lighten that side of trying to figure out so many topics for a month, and then second you would hook people into coming back for the next part of the series. You could do a topic for a month and have 2-4 videos during that month of that topic and not be limited to one video. It could potentially help keep the "soul" while still helping you on topics to discuss.

2024-12-09 15:50:05 +0000 UTCI started listening for the news and the additional content for me was a bonus. I don’t see the direction as something new. You could refer to any additional videos (like a new Linux laptop or distro) from the point of view as a news special report and tailor it accordingly. Either way, I enjoy the channel and look forward to what you come up with

2024-12-09 13:44:43 +0000 UTCI would be okay if you didn't make generic videos about Linux like distro reviews or packaging format comparisons for example, since not all topics always interest me. But are you sure that releasing daily linux news as videos wouldn't be too much work compared to just an audio version? And like you said, the daily news would reduce the number of views on the weekly news video. Plus I think that the daily news podcast was a nice perk to offer to people who watched the weekly news and were interested in more. I'd worry that the daily news videos would be too much and that people would disable notifications because they get too many topics they're not interested in. What I would do if I had a channel would probably be something like what mental outlaw does on youtube and pick maybe one or two news pieces per week and make a longer video about it, giving your opinion on the news article and maybe if it's a problem people could face make a quick and small tutorial on how to fix it.

2024-12-09 13:12:16 +0000 UTCIDK, I like the channel news being an aggregate of the week, it makes it feel like more is happening, and the topic pieces broaden my horizons. I really liked the Vanilla OS video, for example, for talking about atomic distros and Vanilla's take on them and their drawbacks. I'd hope 2 videos a week isn't too much work? But as you say, more goes into them. If you feel like you've talked about everything there is to talk about when it comes to non-time-sensitive topics, I guess a low-effort fallback would be in order (because I think only short news videos and occasional bigger pieces would introduce more risk, but what do I know). Hmm... I might comment again with ideas later.

2024-12-09 12:54:31 +0000 UTCI think the new path of the channel is in line what I come to the channel nowadays. The challenge is the monetization of it all. I really like the daily news and gladly pay for it. I would still support you on Patreon if the only perk were these weekly patroncasts.
