Patroncast S04E09 - Issues compound, procrastination fixed, and the scam app problem
Added 2024-02-26 10:58:29 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
in this week's patroncast, I talk about:
- 00:59 Fixing my procrastination thanks to your tips and help, multiple small personal issues compounding to demotivate me a bit, and a question about a fully sponsored video
- 13:28 The scam app problem we're facing on the Snap Store, probably on Flathub as well, and the various solutions (and their drawbacks). Might end up being a dedicated video if I investigate more on the actual measures these platforms already have in place!
I hope you'll enjoy listening to this one, and have a great week!

Oh wow, that Adobe Reader thing still exists?? Why would anyone want that as a reader, it doesn't do more than most FOSS PDF readers?

2024-02-27 07:25:35 +0000 UTCI guess I can agree to do it, on the condition that I'm OK with the final script. This way, if they really try to turn this into an ad, I can always back out, saying I'm not comfortable with it!

2024-02-27 07:24:59 +0000 UTCHey Nick, I don't really mind you doing a sponsored video about Tuxcare as long as you are transparent about it and as long as the topic of the video makes sense to your audience. About that scam app, I think that Flatpaks on flathub are a bit more secure than the snaps on snapcraft because each Flatpak has a manifest file in the form of a yaml or json file that lets you see how each Flatpak is built and the different modules each app pulls to be built, I haven't found something similar with snaps. Something flathub needs to add, at least on their website, is the ability for anyone to flag a flatpak if it's a problematic package. And for the love of god, someone get rid of that Adobe Reader flatpak on flathub, the binary shipped in that app is from 2013 😭.

2024-02-26 22:23:44 +0000 UTCI see you as a open source reporter and "my professional motivation" to join your Patroen is to keep in touch with the last linux/FOSS news. Said that, I don't thinks it's a bad idea that a journalist have a sponsored content if it doesn't breaks the basic journalist ethics. E.g. good banner Mentioning it's an add, and if you know something that they might not like you won't shut up, etc.. It's dangerous but it's one of those cases that if you keep correct with what you feel it's not bad.
