Research on Chinese Android ROMs, is Flathub centralization bad, and the PS5 - Patroncast S03E07

Hey everyone!

I hope you're all doing well! Here is episode 7 of your patroncast!

In this one, I talk about:

- 01:31: New research showing that Chinese Android ROMs are indeed more privacy invasive than others, and how that comforts me in my current phone choices

- 07:59: the centralization of software in a single remote, Flathub, and whether it's a bad thing or not

- 20:04: some channel updates, and why I bought a Playstation 5 (basically boils down to: Sony's strategy is working on me and I'm a sucker)

I hope you have fun listening to this one, and as always, I'll be happy to discuss these topics in the comments!

Best,

Nick

Yeah, definitely, Lineage removes so many of Google's services that it gives a much faster and smoother experience. batter life should be better too!

Chinese phones: I installed lineage os on my xiaomi poco x3 pro and I noticed shorter boot times compared to a default rom Edit: I got that phone because it was cheap

Re: Centralization: I read a super interesting text yesterday asking if decentralization is really the perfect solution or if we might be missing the point. Centralization itself isn't always bad. It has some benefits for security and ease of use. We wouldn't want every developer to have to host their own flatpack server. So what's the difference between good and bad centralization? If the cost of moving is high, just like the cost of leaving Facebook is high because you lose your friends, then that's bad centralization. If you can easily leave and go elsewhere without consequences, you can leave to a more private and safe platform. So that's good. If the centralized platform is managed in a democratic way, then that's even better. If it's managed by a few elites, either the owner of a private company or the only few people who are technical enough to know how to create a server, then that's bad. I'll try to see if I can find that text and share it here.
