Today’s comic is special. The art is by a young fellow named Dash Sutton. This super talented 12 year-old also happens to be the son of a buddy of mine from high school.
When I first came up with the idea for this strip I knew I wanted the art style to be chaotic and underdeveloped, like it was done by a kid with clear if unrefined talent. So naturally, after trying (and failing) to do it myself my editor suggested letting an actual kid do it. Dash, who has attended an arts school since kindergarten, was a pretty obvious choice. Especially since the only instructions I gave him were “it needs to look kind of bad” and he immediately got what I was going for. I have to say Dash totally nailed this one. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the guest strip and to get ahead of the questions: yes he was paid and no his father wasn’t the inspiration for Kevin… not completely. Almost entirely, mostly not.

Dash’s art is unironically great.

Thank you for nurturing and mentoring the next generation of artists.

Applause for Dash. That kid had a future.

It's so cool that this might be the first published work of a future cartoonist. He managed to make the art the right degree of wonky while also keeping the expressions spot on, therefore succeeding in BOTH the elements required to make this strip work, elements which are seemingly on opposite ends of the artistic spectrum... if that makes any sense. Really solid work!

Nicely done. It's dawning on me that this is a SUNDAY STRIP. Like, for the newspaper. Holy [REDACTED], man. You've made it.

This is impressive!

This is very cute.
