As you enter the mouth of the cave and step into the dark, you hear a crunch underfoot and you're met with the sickening stench of decay. You light your lantern to investigate, and its amber light floods the space, revealing hundreds of bones scattered across the floor.

Against the walls you spot them - mounds of bones several feet tall, the remains of dozens of humanoid skeletons.

You hear something stirring in the shadows.

Working on my last cave map, I struggled to decide on its purpose, caught between a bandit camp and a monster's den, I ultimately decided to do both, but I wasn't happy with simply providing them as variants of the same cave map, so I decided to make two separate maps.

I really wanted to include an opening in the ceiling of the cave for a couple of reasons, but mostly because I liked the thought of giving monsters that can climb or fly a means of escape. Or for more clever monsters, perhaps they flee when they hear the party approaching (the floor being covered in bones provides a decent early-warning system, no doubt), only to double back and block the party's retreat from behind?

Of course, it works both ways - the party could use it to attempt a pincer maneuver on whatever horrors lurk within. They'll need all the advantages they can get, after all.

I've also provided a variant without the bones, in case you'd like a more subtle or flexible encounter.
