Castle Ravenloft Foundry Build by u/splashed_potato

Some of you already saw on the Curse of Strahd subreddit a few days ago that u/splashed_potato put together a Castle Ravenloft build for Foundry VTT using my maps, and they were kind enough to provide this build for the community! This features every level of the castle on a single scene, with walls, lights, doors, windows, and stairs all set up for your convenience, plus a pretty nifty macro for the brazier in the dungeon.
Attached is a zip file containing all the files you'll need to recreate their build, and a README document with instructions for how to make use of the build - you'll need the Levels module, but it's pretty easy to set-up overall. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask and I'll answer to the best of my abilities, but as it's not my build, I'm not yet intimately familiar with it myself!
I've also uploaded the files to Google Drive, as you can never have too many back-ups.
Thanks again to u/splashed_potato for putting this together - from my brief experiments with it so far, it's a fantastic resource!
Troubleshooting:
A lot of folk have had issues with the walls and doors appearing across all floors simultaneously. If that's the case, this fix usually seems to do the trick.
Among the tools on the left side of the screen, there should be an image of three square tiles stacked on top of each other. Click on that, and among the options that appear, there's another image of the same three stacked tiles. If you click on that, it gives you the ability to click on the floor you want to view through a menu on the right.
Hi friends. I was having the same problem with the infinity walls. I'm using Foundry Version 11, build 315. To fix it, I went to "game settings" in the upper right (the two gear cog icon), then "configure settings." Select "wall height" in the upper left menu. Then, check mark the box labeled "Migrate Wall-Height Data on Startup." Then restart foundry and re-load the ravenloft map. I was pleasantly surprised to find all the walls where they needed to be.
Thanks for the great work Aonbarr and splashed potato!

I'll try to see if I can get the doors to disappear, but they seem stubborn

Hi Nathan!
If you find the (Your User Name)/AppData/Local/FoundryVTT folder, you can find the Data folder there! It's possible your AppData folder may be a hidden folder (mine was marked as hidden, though I'm nearly certain it wasn't the last time I used it). If so, if you click 'View' in your Finder window, you can check 'Hidden Items' to reveal the folder and get where you need to go!

Hey there, I'm having trouble with step 2 on the readme, how do I get to the folder where I'm supposed to store the images? Thanks!

Hi Sarah!
Unfortunately, I have no idea why the JSON file sets the walls to infinity, but I'll take a look to see if I can come up with a solution!
As for making a new file, I didn't make this one myself, but if I can figure out the problem and fix it, I'll upload a fixed version of the JSON file!

Hello. First of all, I am not living in English, so please understand even if I am not familiar with English. I'm trying to make the sentence as easy as possible.
The great graphics you made helped me a lot. But when I tried to use this json file, I found one fatal problem.
The height of the walls dividing the zones is the same as "top:infinity / bottom: -infinity". This issue becomes clear through the Levels module that when each layer is selected, the line representing the wall cannot be identified at all. In conclusion, all tokens, whether they're in the catacombs or at the top of the castle, are blocked by walls on every floor.
Do you happen to know how to solve this problem? If not, it would be inconvenient, but could you make a new Json file and update it?

I realised enabling Levels and having it's UI active made the walls invisible when in wall mode, I have to close it to see the walls. Rookie error.
I also realised that all the wall heights are set from -Infinity to Infinity. Which is why my characters are being blocked. It looks like the json data contains the height information but this hasn't been applied.
I've been away for a while and decide to play with this map tonight

When you drop the token in, the menu is still visible and the ground layer is the only one that's active, right?
If so, it sounds like the problem is with the tokens rather than the map set-up, though I guess I can't say that with total certainty. Do their vision and movement behave normally on other maps?
As for token height, I assume you've tried using the default height of 6, and if that's still not working, I'm not sure where the issue would be...
I'll try to see if I can think of a solution, but unfortunately I'm not as knowledgeable of Foundry as I used to be. It might be worth asking in the Foundry Discord, or in the Curse of Strahd Discord's Foundry channel - there are a bunch of people in both who know Foundry much better than I do!

I can access the menu and view layers individually.
If I drag and drop a token onto the ground layer and then select that token to see what it see's. I can still see all the layers above and they block me too. The token's height is zero and the default token height is 6

Hi Rossua - thanks for signing up!
It sounds like it could be the same issue Rafa described earlier (as did several others), so I'm going to paste in the fix I offered them, as it worked in most cases:
Among the tools on the left side of the screen, there should be an image of three square tiles stacked on top of each other (the Levels icon, that is). Click on that, and among the options that appear, there's another image of the same three stacked tiles. If you click on that, it gives you the ability to click on the floor you want to view through a menu on the top right.
If not that, do you have height settings for the tokens?
Let me know if any of this helps - if not, we can try to figure it out!

hey this is great, thanks allot for all your hard work!
I'm having trouble with the setup, the levels import correctly and have the correct heights set.
However my tokens are stuck, when selected I can still see other levels, although they're transparent. But they also get stuck by invisible walls, which I still can't see when wall controls are selected. It looks like something hasn't loaded correctly, any ideas what that could be?
Thanks!

If you just copy and pasted the 'maps' folder into your Foundry's 'Data' folder, the path *should* work, but yeah, it might be best to double check!
The only time I've seen that error notification on tiles was when the paths were incorrect - there might be other causes, but none that I'm familiar with personally. If it's not an issue with the paths, let me know and I'll get Googling possible solutions! :)

Yeah, is the triangle thing, ima check it again to see if i didn't mess up the path, but i think i didn't, do you have any ideia of what other thing could cause that just in case?

Hi Ariel!
I'm sorry to hear it's not working for you, but I'll help if I can!
Just to clarify a few things:
-The tiles aren't appearing at all, correct? Are they simply not there at all, or are they displaying as a triangle with an exclamation point? If you see the exclamation point, that usually means the path to the image isn't correct, so you may need to check your file structure for the tiles to make sure it matches the file structure u/splashed_potato set up.
-If the tiles aren't appearing at all, the solution I offered Rafa in the comment above probably won't work, but it might be worth checking that, *just in case*.
-You definitely have the Levels module installed *and* activated through the settings for the world you're building the scene in?
Sorry if these are really obvious - such is the problem with troubleshooting stuff like this, we've got to make sure we've got the basics covered first!

Hi Rafa!
This might not be the exact issue with your case, but it sounds a lot like an issue I had myself when I first tested the build!
Among the tools on the left side of the screen, there should be an image of three square tiles stacked on top of each other. Click on that, and among the options that appear, there's another image of the same three stacked tiles. If you click on that, it gives you the ability to click on the floor you want to view through a menu on the right.
Let me know if this helps! If not, I'll try to help you figure it out to the best of my abilities, but I'm afraid I don't know Foundry as well as I used to!

Hi! Am i the only one who can't make it work? I click "Import Data" to scene and I can see different levels but tiles seem to not be loaded properly. Should not be at '/maps/...' ?? My FoundryVTT version is 249 and DnD5E is 1.5.7.

That'd be fine with me so long as I'm credited and there's a Patreon link in there somewhere, and since you were already planning on doing so, you're good to go! I look forward to seeing your build! :)

If it is OK with you I would like to build it into a Module and submit it to Foundry. I always wanted to learn how to package Scenes as a Module :P of course I will credit you and your patreon.

Thank you Sven - that'd be fantastic! I know a lot of folk look for very different things in their Foundry builds, so having options can never hurt! :)

I already started on my own Ravenloft build but i still love this upload, as I can use it to check out how he did things.
Once I am done I will also export the Scene and post it for you. Compared to splashed_potato I did some things different so far:
- I lowered the DPI in order to save some bandwith
- I use Monk's Active tiles to automatically create things like traps that trigger when a token enters them.
