Blue Water Inn 2.0 (30x18, 200px)

Edit 06/02/2022: Thanks to u/The_Ugly_DM on Reddit, who has provided his single-scene Foundry VTT build for this location! You'll need to use the Adventure Importer/Exporter, Levels, and the Better Roofs modules to use his build, and unfortunately, it only works with the Forge. It can still be used for locally hosted games, but you'll need to replicate the pathing to the images to set up the scene.

Edit 21/01/2022:
Updated to standardize formats and style, and made some other minor visual improvements.  Added a version of the roof without the cutout for the attic (and a WebP file for this complete roof) changed the roof color to be closer to the map in the module, and provided a WebP file for wolf head trophies to be placed above the ground floor, in case you want to have them overhead when your party pass beneath them.

Original Post:

This one took a little longer than expected - some of the new methods I'm trying to make use of resulted in some minor difficulties exporting this map properly, but it was a pretty good learning experience! I also realised while working on this one that I definitely like making battle maps for buildings than for the outdoors. Not entirely sure why - perhaps because I get to do more with the lighting?

You can download all my maps for free here, and you can find this specific set here.

These maps were made with assets from Forgotten Adventures, Tom Cartos, and AoA, and they come with grid/gridless, day/night, PNG/UVTT, and full-size/Roll20 size variants.

Ah-HA! I couldn't remember what "Unedited" was so I had to scroll all the way down here to find it. Could you kindla add a blurb to your Directory post mentioning that Unedited means Unfiltered? I'm sure other people scratch their heads at it as well. ;)

James Long

Can do - I'll add a note now! :)

Is there a way for me to see quickly what maps you touched up? Could you add a note onto the overview page?

Sven Schlaepfer

Thanks Sven! Yeah, I went through all the maps I'd touched up (Death House to Vallaki East Gate) and they all had the same issue, so I just reuploaded the WebP files for those. I'm working on a new map currently, but will get back to standardising everything else very soon!

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

Thanks! They seem to be good. I haven't noticed any other Builds that had the problem. If I see any I will send you a message. Also the unedited WEBP are exactly what i meant, testing them in FVTT right now.

Sven Schlaepfer

OK, so, for some reason, the action I set up in Photoshop to automate the filters I apply is responsible for this. The file is fine before being packaged, but once I package it, something changes and it no longer maintains the transparent backgrounds. I've since tried applying the filters manually, packaging them, extracting them, and testing them, and it seems to have solved the problem. I don't know what the difference is between the automated process and doing it manually, but there we are. Now, I need to test all the maps I've reexported, as I'm not sure when I started automating the WebP edits... I've included the unedited JPEGs and WebP files here too, so you can take a look at them. Let me know if they're a significant improvement - as it's even more to upload and worry about, I'm not certain I'll provide them consistently, but if you think it's absolutely worth it, I'll probably implement them going forward! Let me know if I've missed anything Sven, and thank you for your patience - your help with troubleshooting this stuff is invaluable!

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

Did you try repacking them and reuploading? Might have changes something in the Antivirus Checks that Patreon likely does on your uploads.

Sven Schlaepfer

So, if I use the files on my desktop, Foundry has no issue. If I download the files I'm hosting on Patreon, which are the exact same files, and put them into Foundry, the transparent background becomes white. I have no idea why this is happening, but I'll try to figure out a solution...

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

That's bizarre - I tried all of the Blue Water Inn files on my end and they worked. I'll try reuploading them tonight or tomorrow, and hopefully that'll fix it! I don't have a Discord server, I'm afraid - I might look into it at some point, but for the moment, I can't imagine it would be very active. If you'd rather send me feedback like this through Discord though, by all means! Send me a message with your username and I'll get back to you! :) As for sharing completed scenes, I've actually been speaking to some folk about sharing their Ravenloft builds for Foundry, and I'd certainly be willing to host some community builds for other levels too!

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

I actually only noticed it in Foundry. I updated my GPU Driver and restarted my computer just to be sure but the problem persists: https://i.imgur.com/Ny4Swyp.jpg I only have the problem with the Blue Water Inn files, Castle Ravenloft is just fine (see the bottomr ight that has the transparency pattern. And yea I mean the filter you use. The FVTT lights cannot cut through it and that makes them a bit to dark during daytime: https://i.imgur.com/FG2PLbt.png although you can still get very moody nighttime views: https://i.imgur.com/FG2PLbt.png it is no big deal though so no need to change everything. On a related note, do you have a Discord? Things like this might be easier to check and fix in a discord chat :) Also it would allow us to post things like completed Foundry Levels for other DMs to use. Edit: Checked the files on my Phone as well - only the Blue water inn have the withe background

Sven Schlaepfer

Do the WebP files retain that white background in Foundry? I had someone mention the same issue before, but when I tried running them in Foundry, they were fine - it turned out they just hadn't tried them in Foundry and assumed the white background that shows up in their browser would appear in Foundry too. I'll try to test them myself when I get set up and re-export them if necessary - as this has happened twice now, I'll probably start testing the WebP files in every batch. I dread the extra time this will add to exporting and uploading, but if it must be done, it must be done! As for fully lit, do you mean the versions that haven't been put through the filter I use? If so, I can do that - they'll be a lot less moodier, but if it makes it easier to control these things in Foundry, it's probably a good idea! Edit: To follow up - the WebP files do have transparent backgrounds when I place them in Foundry, so let me know if you still get the white backgrounds in Foundry itself and I'll check it out in more detail!

No rush!! The Burgomasters Mansion is my Training building, as my players won't be able to go there since it burned down The Blue Water in is a more central location for them. Edit just checked the files out. I love the WEBP collection. Also I forgot about the Wolf heads. they will add a level of immersion to the building for sure! Edit2: I found an Error in the WEBP files - The Backgropund is Solid White instead of transparent. Seems there was an error in the export. Also is it possible that you export the "no lighting" maps fully lit? Now the maps are quite dark when I use FVTT to light them.

Sven Schlaepfer

Hi Sven - I just uploaded the updated version of the Blue Water Inn. So, you won't have the dark shadows in Foundry, and there's a version of the roof without the cutout (though the original version survives on Drive for now - I'm only posting the updated maps to Patreon for now). Hope it helps! Rather strangely, I actually had a version without the cutout on my laptop - not sure how it never got uploaded. I'll get to the Burgomaster's Mansion soon - I'm tackling updating the maps in chronological order, so I just have to get through St Andral's Church and Vallaki Town Square first!

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

Hi Sven! I'm not entirely sure why I didn't make a closed roof to begin with - I'll definitely get that done soon! The shadows in Foundry are something I noticed after I'd already made quite a few maps, so I never got around to fixing them. I'm hoping to actually start exporting everything in consistent formats soon, and getting rid of those shadows is high priority for those exports! I might actually start the process tomorrow, as I'm not currently working on a specific map at this precise moment...

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

I have a small Feature Request for this map. Could you add a tyle with a closed roof? So the Secret room under the roof isn't visible when you show the roof from the outside with FVTT levels/Better Roofs. Edit. Also the shadows of th Transparent layers are super dark in Foundry - they make it, that the upper floors seem disconnected from the lower ones. Any chance you can provide those floors without any shadows?

Sven Schlaepfer

I'll try to have as many Vallaki maps done by then as I can - I like a bit of a challenge!

Vincent - Aonbarr Cartography

Perfect timing, my players will arrive in Vallaki next week :-)
