I like to experiment with many styles and drawing techniques. As shown in my previous works, sometimes I paint everything from scratch, while other times I paint over 3D models depending on the style I'm going for or simply efficiency when it comes to comics. Less often I paint over photographs, but it's something I really enjoy as it brings a distinct style to the cityscapes.
This current wip is a paintover of a photo I took in Hong Kong. There's still a lot left to finish in this painting but I want show everyone the difference between the raw photo to the paintover.
Below is a raw photo taken with my fisheye lens in Hong Kong last month.

I wanted to go for a more night life look so in Adobe Lightroom, I edited the photo to have more vibrant colors.

Then I noticed the composition had a slight spiral feel to it with triangles, but I wanted it to be more circular so I used warp and liquify in Photoshop to make the following.

Then I used the FilterForge plugin to give the whole photo a painted look, but of course filters are not perfect so there's a lot of manual touching up and painting in brand new details as well.

Now I'm at this stage of the wip, I still need to touch up on the right side and add details to all the umbrellas. Lastly I will paint in a central figure, probably a little girl.

I used the same technique a while back on another painting and made a full tutorial for it :) You can watch it for free on my website.
