Usually done to wear down the victims self-esteem and assurance. For example I could say "Yea, you do know what gaslighting means, you're just avoiding the question" You deny the person the ability to feel right so you can control other aspects of their life, as every time you get questioned, you gaslight them, make them feel wrong and stupid and soon enough they stop questioning you.
