This year has been difficult for baraag.

In July we nearly met our demise as a community when our domain at baraag.net was seized by our longstanding registrar at the time. Through cunning scheme and sheer luck of which I will not go into detail, I tricked them into releasing the domain and managed to transfer it to another registrar.

Server upgrade

As many of you have probably noticed already, baraag has been very slow to browse lately. We are experiencing unprecedented spikes in traffic as people try to flee places like twitter for alternative platforms such as bluesky or mastodon and the fediverse. To put it simply, the current setup can no longer keep up. baraag under max load, needs upgrade

Earlier today, I noticed baraag being extremely slow to load pages. At first I suspected a possible ddos attack but upon closer inspection it appears that baraag is experiencing a spike in legitimate traffic. All the VPS slices in charge of serving the web to baraag users were under max load and they were struggling to keep up, causing a slowdown in page loading.

Status of baraag

baraag is now running on new upgraded hardware, a private network of 5 servers instead of being hosted all on one dedicated machine as it historically has been the past 7 years. Funding is starting to concern me and I hope to garner more support to help cover the increased monthly costs.

My domain registrar (register.com) terminated my account without warning and is not replying to my request for appeal or to transfer the domain to a different registrar. I have submitted a ticket for escalation and hope to have an update on the situation in the next 24 hours.

Emergency fundraising

While baraag has remained closed as invite-only, the server is now hitting its limits and I am left with no choice but to make another upgrade soon to keep us running smoothly.

The new server I am eyeing will increase my monthly cost by an additional $300 USD, an amount that I can bear for a short while before it stops being financially sustainable for me.

In light of the twitter fallout and a mass exodus of new users being introduced to Mastodon and joining the fediverse for the first time, the server for baraag buckled at the influx of traffic. I thought I had more time to upgrade the server but I am unable to immediately address all this new activity to keep up with it.
