This is an updated version of the basemesh I've used for many of my characters in the past few years. It should support you creating characters to rig and animate in many different scenarios, but I've also included a few cool things I've been developing with materials and rigify.

The rig is mostly a rigify rig, but I've added a bit of customization to it, so I'm hoping it's familiar and easy to use, but still has a lot of powerful control.
The face rig is very close to rigify's, so don't expect a lot of functionality above rigify's there. I did try to plus it up a little bit, but the changes aren't substantially different.
